Hi,
I want to port gold to the z architecture (https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=18378).
I'm thinking about forking git://sourceware.org/git/binutils-gdb.git and working on the binutils-2_25-branch.
Is this the best way to do it for easy integration later?

No. I'd recommend using master as the base, not a
release-branch.
