I don't have a problem if I'm using as 2.9.1 (in /usr/bin on redhat 6.0).
(I have a machine I'm running 2.0.* on successfully and I don't want to
upgrade)
If this is a problem, it should be documented somewhere...

These are not assembler errors. These error messages are from the
compiler, not the assembler. This problem is described in the gcc
FAQ:

Please read the GCC FAQ. Specifically the section describing issues with
bogus asms that are used by older versions of the linux kernel.

Yup. The asm is bogus, this is not a binutils or gcc problem.
