Where is a reference to the archive file format used by ar(1) and friends? I
unfortunately find the source code thoroughly unreadable.

It is described in several places: the generic ELF description, the
SVR4 docs, the SVR3 docs, the ar(5) man page on many Unix systems (but
not many GNU/Linux systems).
