These days binutils has a more public presence than it did when the
old translations@cygnus alias was set up.  A while back I suggested
that these messages go directly to the current binutils maintainers.
I don't think anything came of that.

Ian also forwarded a copy of this message to me.  I logged into the
translations web site and sent an email about changing the email
address.

I am not sure what to do with the translation packages though.  For
example I downloaded the GAS French translation "gas-2.11.fr.po", but
I do not know what I should do with it, or whether it is something
that ought to be checked into the CVS repository.

Yes, it should be.

A `.po' file holds translations for a given language.  It is a source
file.

Suppose, as above, you get the `fr.po' file for gas.  This is the
French translations for a given release of gas.

You want to copy `fr.po' into binutils/gas/po/, and cvs add it there.
Then you want to make sure that binutils/gas/configure.in mentions
`fr' in the ALL_LINGUAS assignment.

At least that is how it was done back when I gettextized things.  I'm
assuming that the gettext infrastructure in binutils hasn't been
updated to track the later gettext releases.  The ALL_LINGUAS stuff
may have changed since then; I haven't been watching gettext and I
don't really know.

That is still the curren procedure. Something will change if you
update to a newer gettext version. Please see the gettext
documentation for details, and don't hesitate to ask
translation@iro.umontreal.ca if you have any questions.

On downloading new translations: Once we change the contact address,
each email notification will show the URL to download from (or, at
your option, already include the translation). To integrate
translations that already have been contributed, it is best to start
from

http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/contrib/po/maint/

For example,

http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/contrib/po/maint/opcodes/

contains the file that you'll need to add to opcodes/po.
