Try the latest version.  There may not be a great deal of improvement.

I double checked. The patch is applied in the 2.17.50.0.3 binary rpms.
Have you checked the correct linker was used?

If you follow README for the latest Linux binutils, that patch should
be applied.

I tried the latest version.  It didn't help that much.  I then
hand-applied the patch that caches the value of the kept symbols, and
that helped a dramatic amount.  I would strongly argue for the inclusion
of that patch.  I think it was the one from the guy with the big Oracle
program, or some such.
