If you want binutils for Windows, you will do better to ask on a cygwin
mailing list. See http://sourceware.org/cygwin/ for more information.
They should have prebuilt releases for you.
If you want to try to build it yourself, see the file binutils/README in
the sources that you unpacked.

I have tried it but it recognizes only 32 bit binaries.
Eg.
$ binutils/objdump -a /lib/amd64/libc.so.1
binutils/objdump: /lib/amd64/libc.so.1: File format not recognized
$
While I was enabling other targets for linux, added target i686-pc-linux-gnu,
I could see binutils started recognizing the amd64 binaries on solaris
10 x86. Not sure is this right?
Eg.
$ binutils/objdump -a /lib/amd64/libc.so.1
/lib/amd64/libc.so.1: file format elf64-x86-64
/lib/amd64/libc.so.1
$
Let me know if there is any information on adding targets, I would be
happy to add the support for amd64-pc-solaris2.10.

-JNR.

The triplet is actually i686-pc-solaris2.10, and it should already
work. Although, there've been reports of some problems using GNU ld.

A COFF executable compiled in SCO with Motif is
running in RH 5.2 but not in higher versions.

I don't know any Linux supports the ABI used by COFF. You may run COFF
executables with SCO emulation. But I don't think you can run an ELF
executable converted from COFF under Linux.

Why not? Provided it is statically linked, and is laid out in memory
to only require a couple of program segments.
You can't convert a COFF object to ELF, but why can't you convert an
executable?

You can't convert coff executable to ELF. It is not going to work without
extensive changes in binutils.

Hi Nick,
It worked fine. But the file which I converted from coff executable to ELF
32-bit LSB executable is not working in RH 7.2. While executing, it is
giving the outout 'Segmentation fault'. What may be the reason?
Thanks

I think that it would be better to update your sources to the latest
version. For example in the current sources the config.bfd file has
this entry:
i[3456]86-*-linux-gnu*)
targ_defvec=bfd_elf32_i386_vec
targ_selvecs="i386linux_vec bfd_efi_app_ia32_vec"
;;
Which should suit your needs.
Cheers

Hi Nick
Thanks for the reply,
i686-*-linux target does not exist in bfd/config.bfd. What I should add to
that file? I require binutils to convert one coff file to change to elf
format.

Does the i686-*-linux target exist in your copy of bfd/config.bfd ?

Hello,
I configured binutils in RH Linux 7.2 using the command
configure --enable-64-bit-bfd --enable-targets=all
The ouput I got was
Configuring for a i686-unknown-linux host.
Created "Makefile" in /root/Binutils/binutils-2.7
*** BFD does not support target i686-unknown-linux.
*** Look in bfd/config.bfd for supported targets.
Configure in /root/Binutils/binutils-2.7/opcodes failed, exiting.
Please help me to configure this
Thanks and regards
Saresc
