Hi,
we are reaching the end of the summer which is the usual time for the release.
I plan to create the branch within the next two weeks. If you have something important to submit, please tell me ASAP.
Once the branch is created, I will wait a few weeks before making the release so that discovered regressions could be put into the branch.
Tristan.

The cortex-a8 workaround in gold is broken. I have a submitted a
patch to Ian but have not heard from him yet.

I made a release here of gdb from head to do some testing on various
machines one machine in particular came across an issue, looking at
the tarball that was generated I see that gnu-oids.texi for some
reason doesn't make it into the release.
the build worked on a number of machines the machine in question was a
sparc64-unknown-openbsd4.6 available on the compile farm
Configuring in ./etc
../../archer/etc/standards.texi:2262: @include `gnu-oids.texi': No
such file or directory.

So arm-linux isn't very interesting these days, and nor is arm-aout
(which I'm surprised we still claim to support at all). But
arm-linux-gnueabi is very important (as its a primary GCC target).

Deprecate it. If ARM maintainers aren't interested in a target it's
likely that users are better served by staying with an older version
of binutils.

I think I stole the list of arm targets from Nick, quite a while ago.
Please suggest a better (preferably smaller!) list.

Hi,
I'm trying to deprecate arm-aout in binutils are I can't seem to find a
formal way of doing this. Any pointers would be helpful.
Thanks,
Tejas.

Talking about deprecation, I wonder if anyone uses the non-ELF MIPS
ports with up-to-date binutils? mips-ecoff has had terrible testresults
for a while, but I've no idea whether the failures are benign.

At least the capability to `objcopy' to ecoff-*mips has to stay for the
sake of some old systems' firmware requiring that format for boot images
(though some may prefer the `elf2ecoff' tool lurking around). Therefore
I'd expect a need for the BFD target to stay for the foreseeable future;
the rest may or may not be required -- AFAIR DEC Ultrix support was
dropped from GCC a while ago; can't say about SGI IRIX or MIPSCO systems.
That written I may well see if I can find some time to have a look into
these ECOFF failures; I have planned to do some ECOFF testing having had
seen some changes to relocation matching patterns that were a bit too
aggressive IMO.

Agreed, that would be nice. Minors issues could be fixed with 2.21.1.

Not originally, I believe -- and the contents of our config.bfd suggest
that version 5 was the first one to use ELF. And I meant the ECOFF-only
releases here of course.

Hi,
now that things are little bit more stabilize, I propose this schedule for the 2.21 release:
* branch creation early November (2nd or 3rd)
* prerelease just after
* period of stabilization (patches for regressions or important fixes are allowed)
* 2.21 release before the end of November.
Of course if we discover important bugs after, I will make a 2.21.1 release in January of February.
Tristan.

Hi,
it is high time to start the release as we are far behind the usual schedule :-)
I plan to create the branch on Friday 5th (in the morning), unless there is a strong reason against it.
Tristan.

Which time zone?

No objection here. I have a couple of fixes that I'll get posted during the
day/evening (4th, GMT) but there shouldn't be anything seriously tricky about
them.
cheers,

Hi,
I have just created the binutils-2_21 branch.
You can *backport* regression fixes, or documentation improvements.
For anything else or in case of doubt, do not hesitate to ask.
(Of course these rules will become more strict when the release will be created. So do not hesitate to ask if you don't follow closely this mailing list).
Thanks,
Tristan.

The daily update should probably be switched to the 2.21 branch.
Andreas.
