gcc4 is known to miscompile binutils.  See
http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=19937
Of course, you may have found yet another gcc4 bug.

ok, thanks. I recompiled and tested again, nothing there, so, mishap I guess.

well, neither was using gcc4... just some mishappening I can't
understand... clueless, however, not gcc4...
