Subject: [MIPS, committed] Use lower-case error messages in tc-mips.c
Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2013 20:10:00 -0000 [thread overview]
Message-ID: <87ppt9fnmb.fsf@talisman.default> (raw)
[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 30655 bytes --]
There's been a long-standing inconsistency about whether error messages
start with upper or lower case. tc-mips.c mostly seemed to prefer upper
case, so that's what I tended to use (and lately have been asking other
people to use). But there are some exceptions, and files in the
top-level gas/ directory almost always start with lower case instead.
Starting with lower case is also what the GNU standard prefers:
The string /message/ should not begin with a capital letter when it
follows a program name and/or file name, because that isn’t the
beginning of a sentence. (The sentence conceptually starts at the
beginning of the line.) Also, it should not end with a period.
so this patch converts tc-mips.c to that form. Hope I didn't miss any...
I also took the chance to replace "illegal" with "invalid".
Tested on mips64-linux-gnu and applied.
Richard

(s_mips_end, s_mips_ent, s_mips_frame, s_mips_mask, mips_parse_cpu):
Start error messages with a lower-case letter. Do not end error
messages with a period. Wrap long messages to 80 character-lines.
Use "cannot" instead of "can't" and "can not".
