The old one has

changequote(,)dnl
BFD_VERSION=`${srcdir}/../bfd/configure --version | sed -n -e '1s,.* ,,p'`
changequote([,])dnl
AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(ld, ${BFD_VERSION})

When BFD_VERSION is changed, we only need to regenerate
configure in bfd.  Can we make it to work with the new scheme?
