This is easily solved.  I can patch it thus for Debian.  In fact, I will
in the next upload.  Thanks for the suggestion :-)

Instead of:
~ > ld -V
GNU ld version 2.11.92.0.5 20011005
  Supported emulations:
   elf64alpha
   alpha

Would this be an improvement at least?
