And I totally agree with you analysis. I would just add my own two thoughts on the subject. First, if one wants the BIG library for his/her embedded product, one will most probably be willing to pay the price for the full-blown archive with all locales in it, so that's not a real issue, I believe. Second, maintaining a patch against every and all glibc versions just for the locales is just too much trouble. If the target and host do not have the same endiannes and/or unit32_t alignment, then it is still possible to switch to using eglibc instead of plain glibc.
