Call For Participation: buildroot + crosstool-NG Developpers' Day

Hello All!

As was the case the two previous years, Buildroot developpers will be
meetting again for a full day, the day after ELC-E. This year however,
the developers' day extends to crosstool-NG developpers as well.

This will be the fifth Buildroot Developpers Day (two at ELC-E, and two
at FOSDEM). All previous editions were really interesting, and meeting IRL
really helped find interesting solutions to the many problems buildroot
addresses. Hopefully, this one will be as good as the previous ones, and
will be beneficial to both projects!

The meeting will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, October the 29th,
2011, the day after ELC-E 2011. The exact location is as yet unknown, but
we'll be sure to keep you informed when it is.

Here is a preliminary planning for the day (all local time):

- Morning: shared session, both projects together
  - 09:00 - 09:30
    - waking coffee
  - 09:30 - 12:00                                                                                                               
    - tentative time-line to finalise the crosstool-NG backend                                                                  
      integration in buildroot: what's in, what's left.
    - the shared problems: patchsets...
  - 12:00 - 13:00
    - lunch break

- Afternoon: separate sessions, each projects on their own;
  if needed, interaction is welcome nonetheless! :-)

  buildroot:
  - 13:00 - ..:..
    - the planning for the buildroot afternoon session will be
      sent at a later time

  crosstool-NG:
  - 13:00 - ..:..
    - state of the project
      - administrativa, ressources, code...
    - planning forward:
      - canadian rewrite, companion libraries, infrastructure...

- Evening: both projects reunited again, dinner, party! :-)

This will be an opportunity for the two communities to keep (and get) in
touch, share our experiences, know each others, and improve ourselves.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Prague for this developers' day!

event" would be interesting :-)

BTW regarding the MacOSX trouble I have trying to create a working
mips toolchain, I was wondering if someone would be interested in
remote hacking?

What I can provide is a root ssh account on an OSX machine especially
installed for this occasion, with  decent ipv4 and ipv6 connectivity,
+ myself on irc, voip or jabber to give a hand for OSX specifics if
needed.

It's for a very basic uclibc toolchain for cross compiling on OSX for
the fritzbox 7390 -  copy of the .config attached.

All the build environement, config and everything are available in a
~7 Gb dmg file mounting as /Volumes/Toolchains if you want to
replicate the very same problem.

at least you did not configure awk to be gawk.
this awk error message gets printed by bsd's awk, not gawk.

Again: did you read and follow docs/C\ -\ Misc.\ tutorials.txt?

Please make sure that the toolchain builds correctly

Using the very same .config file  (attached) with the latest version
pulled from hg, I got the toolchain compiled under Linux.

It works just fine after a little ln -sf (reported that in a separate
post) and manually fixing unifdef.c for the getline rename problem
(http://crosstool-ng.org/hg/crosstool-ng/rev/01d01185eb18)

Preparing an on-line, interactive session would be quite a challenge. We
usually crash to some random place for the session (last year in Cambridge,
we ended up in a café), and the internet connection is not guaranteed. This
also means there could be ambiant /noise/ from other people present at that
place.

Also, the developpers' day are usually ultra-interactive, which would be
rather dificult to handle as an on-line event. It usually involves peeking
at each other's screen, doing some code, possibly napkin-drafting stuff,
cigarette-and-coffee breaks...

And we have a limited, if even existant at all, budget, where we all pay
on our own money all the stuff we need during the day: probably no beamer,
and most probably no camera, which makes it hard to record and stream any
media stream.

So I'm afraid this will be a must-be-physically-present kind of event. Of
course, I'm still open to any proposal to prepare for a really trivial
setup that will make this possible. (Speaking for the crosstool-NG side,
here, the buildroot guys may have another position.)

If you wish that some points be discussed, please post your suggestions to
the related mailing list (or both if it applies to both projects), and it's
gonna be added to the schedule.

In any case, there will be a transcript of the day posted back to the lists
afterward. For example, see the summary for the dev-day at the last ELC-E (I
will be doing the same for crosstool-NG, of course):

Unfortunately, we'll have to stick to a local (UTC+2) day-time event,
starting around 09:00, and ending around 19:00, to cope with participants
constraints (traveling back home, and such other contingencies).

toolchain on OSX! That sure ain't an easy 1-day job.

You could prepare a patch file for gdb-6.8 to let Yann integrate
the fix into ct-ng so this configuration will work
in the future without manual intervention.

I assume that the find is in uclibc's build system, since I cannot
grep it in ct-ng's own build scripts.

But I think that preparing the patch can well be delegated to the users ;-)
Once you can clearly identify the file where the find in question is located in
it should not be too difficult.
There is a tutorial for hg in docs/C*.txt, and preparing a patch file
for uClibc (should the find be in it's files) is easy if you look at
the already existing patch files in crosstool-ng.

No. That's not the way I'd go for such basic tools such as find etc.
I'd also regard the possibility to omit the path for find a severe
design flaw of the GNU software, and software that exploits this as buggy.

Unfortunately, we were not able to find a proper place beforehand.

Some of us are now on site, so they'll be able to look around for an
adequate venue for the day. As well, I'll be on site Tuesday afternoon,
and I should have a little bit of time to help find a place.

mails once in Prague, you can try and get to us (Peter, Thomas, or me)
during the conferences.
