Forward port of my three remaining patches (against SVN as of about a
week ago, but I expect no merge issues).

Also attached the same forward port against the 0.4x branch SVN as of
about a week ago:

The "relocatable" stuff is still...pending or abandoned; I haven't
decided whether it is worth pursuing.
