Heh.

I was pretty surprised too. I couldn't believe I'd missed several revisions.

Who in the world still uses ed?

I was thinking more along the lines of "They are still finding bugs!?!?!" and
"They are still adding features!?!?!"

Can we agree that ed is a better exemplar of software that just won't go away than B20?

The mksh testsuite requires ed to run successfully as well.

I think Barry expressed my incredulity a little more clearly.

I can believe that there are old configure scripts out there still using
ed but it's hard to believe that people are still uncovering enough
problems with ed to warrant multiple new releases.

Maybe it's just some code cleanup to convert ed into a ful-fledged
GUI editor...

Now that you mention it, there was a lot of commentary about transitioning
to lisp in the NEWS file.

GUI ed...ye effin gods....

When you drag and drop a text file on it, does it open the new file,
append to the existing file, or say '?'.

No what am I saying. Of course it says '?'. That's what ed does.

The '?' actually rotates in three-dimensions in the GUI version.

It's quite impressive.

Long ago (circa 1979), and far away (Ball Labs, CO), I wrote a
text retrieval system in 'ed'. Shortly thereafter, I started
using MicroEmacs.

I later replaced 'ed' in the retrieval system with 'ex' and awk. (I
always disliked 'vi' -- the visual editor-wannabe.)

Before that, circa 1975, I used a programmable forms letter
system, called 'fed' on a pre-BSD (PDP 11-45?, at NASA Ames) that
used 'ed' for a very flexible form letter system, that I used to
get my job at Bell Labs.

Now, I use TextPad. Nice, but all but dead, and only single
platform -- Windows -- and missing some key features.

BTW, 'ed' is not, by far, the worst editor that I ever used.
'edlin' was worse, by far, 'and 'Inted' on the HP 21MX, was the
very worst.

Also, 'learn', a very clever computer learning system for UNIX
(TM -- some damn bunch of ganiff lawyers ;-)) and the shell
(Bourne), by Kernighan, was based, in part, on 'ed'.

'ed' -- long may it wave[r]. ;-)

My guess is they added a new '--ultra-terse' feedback option. ;-)
Although, fittingly, I'm speechless in trying to describe what
that might mean.

Ok. Someone has to say it, I guess:

Let's leave Ed Hitler (1894-1900) out of this.

In a recent discussion -- http://goo.gl/SYoXB -- Walter Bright mentioned
that he still uses a customized version of MicroEmacs. He pointed out
that he doesn't feel the need for Emacs Lisp and such, since he can just
add the feature to the program and rebuild it.

That's our Walter. :)

I've got a license for TextPad, too. I'm pretty sure it's the only
dedicated text editor I've actually found useful enough relative to free
alternatives like Vim to pay money for. (Not counting editors embedded
in IDEs and such.) I only stopped installing it on my systems because
of its lack of updates. I felt the need to break my dependence on it
before I got bit by some bit rot problem.

Because I was going through my /netrel/src directory looking for updates
and 'ed' comes after 'diffutils'.

So then the next question is why did you check for an update? :-)
The answer may provide hints for why it is still being updated.
