Is it just me or do others have the same feeling that the function name
is a bit... unfortunate. When I read this patch proposal the first time
I thought something like "scan-di-rat? What the heck does *that* mean?
A couple of days later I still tend to pronounce it "scan-di-rat" rather
than "scan-dir-at", and I have serious doubts that I will adapt...
