For me list-fontsets gives
Fontset: -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-default
Fontset: -*-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-standard
Fontset: -bitstream-Bitstream Vera Sans
Mono-normal-normal-normal-*-12-*-*-*-m-0-fontset-startup

I have nothing in my .Xdefaults or .emacs related to fonts, and I don't
specify a font on the command line; so I think emacs is selecting
Bitstream Vera Sans Mono by default. It looks good to me.
