Copy the "XWin Server" link on the start menu, and change the target of the copy from: C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/bash.exe -l -c "/usr/bin/startxwin.exe" to: C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/bash.exe -l -c "/usr/bin/startx" You probably want to change the name of the shortcut to something like "XWin server (windowed)" or whatever... Customize ~/.xinitrc to launch openbox by having it end 'exec openbox' and remove the line which starts twm.
