How do I start WM?

How do I start XWindows in full screen mode with OpenBox window manager?
It used to be that I'd just put the command for the window manager at the end of startxwin.bat.  Now that file's gone away.  
I can't use startxwin.exe as it is multi-window only.  I can run XWin.exe, but the only command line or .XWinrc options I can find for that program are for Windows-specific functions(i.e. system tray icon).

I've read the documentation.  The page you refer to mentions startxwin and startx.
As I mentioned before, startxwin is for multi-window only. 
startx apparently requires a Cygwin shell. I'm trying to start Cygwin/XWindows in full screen mode.
Is there something I missed?

 From your response, it sounds like you haven't actually tried using startx.

Perhaps you should follow my suggestion and try it.

Then please explain how it differs from what you want to achieve.

And you'd be wrong.

I double-clicked on c:\cygwin\bin\startx.  It opens a
dialog titled "Open With" that instructs one to "Choose the program you
want to use to open this file".

It doesn't start XWindows like startxwin.bat used to.

Does http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/using.html#using-starting-startx say to run 
startx by double clicking on it? Not it does not.

Hint: that will not work as startx is bash script, which Windows explorer has 
no idea how to run.

I say that I'm trying to replace a .bat file, which one could presumable run by double-clicking on it, and you propose using a bash script, which one cannot double-click on and then berate me for trying it?

Assuming that a ".bat file means I'm double clicking something" is
actually sort of a stretch.

But, if you need a .bat files why not just put the call to startx in a
.bat file?  You'd have to set the PATH appropriately, of course.

It seems like you should be able to call startxwin.exe directly if
needed too.

Your question was "How do I start XWindows in full screen mode with OpenBox 
window manager?", not "How do I start XWindows in full screen mode with 
OpenBox window manager by double-clicking on something?"

Copy the "XWin Server" link on the start menu, and change the target of the 
copy from:

C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/bash.exe -l -c "/usr/bin/startxwin.exe"

to:

C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/bash.exe -l -c "/usr/bin/startx"

You probably want to change the name of the shortcut to something like "XWin 
server (windowed)" or whatever...

Customize ~/.xinitrc to launch openbox by having it end 'exec openbox' and 
remove the line which starts twm.

Double-click away!

When I do, the Xwindows desktop appears for a split second and disappears.  The "XWin Server" icon works as expected, bringing up a single xterm in a Windows window.

This isn't actually the case, as startxwin always supplies the '-multiwindow' 
option to XWin, and there is no XWin option to specify the default (windowed) 
mode you can add after it.

This is almost by design.  There are a few differences between startx and 
startxwin, appropriate to running in windowed or multiwindow mode, and mixing 
them up would be a bad idea.

* They use different scripts to start clients (~/.startxwinrc and ~/.xinitrc). 
  This is because we expect the .xinitrc to end by starting a WM, which would 
a bad idea for .startxwinrc (as it would discover the internal WM is already 
running (hopefully)) and exit immediately.

* startxwin exits after ~/.startxwinrc has completed and leaves XWin running, 
whereas startx waits until ~/.xinitrc exits (which is usually waiting for the 
WM started by it to exit) and then kills XWin.

To achive this, create a icon that points to
C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/bash.exe -l -c "/usr/bin/startx"

Edit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and change
twm &
to
openbox &

That changes the behavior for all users.

  I tried this last advice.

  I get a quick flash and then gone (Windoze XP SP3, Cygwin 1.7).

  What did I do wrong or what I do too much of or what did I do not enough of?

  I'm really looking forward to a having a nice KDE screen initiated
by cygwin rather than twm.

If so, delete it.

2. Will it start if you manually enter startx in a cygwin shell?

manager, now you talk about kde. That are two different things.

What happens if you start openbox in a bash shell without starting a 
X-Server first?

If I don't set the DISPLAY environment variable then it complains
about it not being set.

If I do set the DISPLAY environment variable then it complains about
not being able to use it.

Apparently I'm missing some components...

$ openbox-session
which: no hsetroot in [PATH content deleted]
which: no esetroot in [PATH content deleted]
xsetroot:  unable to open display 'KWOLCOTT-T61:0.0'
which: no gnome-settings-daemon in [PATH content deleted]
which: no xfce-mcs-manager in [PATH content deleted]
which: no start_kdeinit in [PATH content deleted]
Openbox-Message: Failed to open the display from the DISPLAY
environment variable.

Normally I use the Xming X Window manager if I'm not running the twm
Window Manager executed from Cygwin.

Lets make sure we're on the same page.
Xming X Window manager -> from a quick glance, this is an X server, not a window manager.  It's corresponding 
executable in cygwin would be Xwin.exe, started via either startx or startxwin.exe.

twm and openbox (and openbox-session which adds some autostart and xdg interactions to an openbox manages 
session) are window managers.  window managers require an xserver to be started first, all the X applications 
'paint' themselves on the Xserver.  The window manager, allows you to 'manage' those applications (size, 
location, minimize,maximize etc ).

So running openbox or openbox-session w/o an X server already running will fail ala above.

This is expected, i just wanted to see if it was complaining about 
anything else.

I can confirm problems with openbox. It does not start everytime i try 
on my computer and i get the same behavior that you described, a short 
view of the black background.

Openbox is just a window manager.  If that's all you have in ~/.xinitrc, 
you won't see anything because there are no windows for the WM to decorate.

I know that. Sorry for being to short with the description.
The X-Server dies when openbox starts, and it shouldn't do that, even 
without a window manager. But i see this only every tenth attempt to 
start openbox, while the original poster seems to have this every time.

And I changed /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, no ~/.xinitrc

Interestingly, putting openbox at the end of the start script and doing

exec openbox-session >/tmp/openbox.log 2>&1

seems to stop that, but i haven't tried enough to be sure.

Try this:
Copy the shortcut as mentioned earlier in the email trail.
set the Target to be:
   C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/bash.exe -l -c "/usr/bin/startx -- /usr/bin/Xwin.exe"
Note the double quotes around the last argument.  Without them, Xwin.exe doesn't start on my box.  startx also 
would not invoke Xwin.exe on my box unless I explicitly called it ala above
Commmand line invocation-> $ startx -- /usr/bin/Xwin.exe
perhaps it's not reading the symlink properly (the default server is set as /usr/bin/X, which is symlinked to 
/usr/bin/Xwin.exe) -- nope, explicitly setting default server to /usr/bin/Xwin.exe doesn't start it either via 
a plain startx on the command line.  setting startx to echo the eval of the invocation yields

    xinit "/home/rthompso/.xinitrc"  -- "/home/rthompso/.xserverrc" :0  -auth '/home/rthompso/.serverauth.5912'
aha -- my .xserverrc has:
  #exec X -screen 0 1024x768x16 -engine 4 -ac -nowinkill -noreset -emulate3buttons 100
uncomment it and try again from command line a plain startx... xserver starts up in it's own window with my 
.xinitrc programs running.
shut it down, and try my copy of the shortcut again, starts again.

Now that we've established that mine wasn't starting due to the invalid .xserverrc, reset the shortcut target to
C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/bash.exe -l -c /usr/bin/startx
and try it -> starts again

Pasted below is my .xinitrc (you said you don't have one in $HOME), you can try this one in your $HOME if you 
want.  It will open a couple of rxvt terms and and xterm.  It is configured to startup the openbox window 
manager.  You MAY prefer to copy the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to your $HOME/.xinitrc to use as your base.

c:\cygwin_1.7) and I copied and pasted what you have below into my new

  I don't see a great deal of visible difference between twm and
openbox, but I'll look on openbox.org and find more details.

  The Windoze start shortcut did help, and the ~/.xinitrc did help -- thank you.

i've not checked to see if KDE or any of it's components is/are available as part of the cygwin X stuff (when 
I use a heavyweight desktop environment i use gnome).  a quick search on KDE at the package search page of 
cygwin lists nothing, while a search on gnome lists quite a few.  someone with more knowledge will have to 
advise you

Ugh.  I keep setting off filters of one sort or another.  
I can reproduce your finding.  Putting just "openbox &" in my ~/xinitrc does not work.  
Putting the "exec openbox-session >/tmp/openbox.log 2>&1" line in works fine for the few minutes I tested.
twm and WindowMaker work fine from a Windows shortcut.

Note that the last line does NOT have a '&'.  Quoting from xinit(1):

yep -- mine is probably not the best/a little off.

Note my last line, i'm not at my cygwin box right now, but I'll bet that
if you exit the xterm that is opened on startup, that everything goes
away (i.e. xinit exits after that xterm exits )

exec xterm -geometry 80x6+0+0 -name login


I generally start my xserver & apps with my own script.  Which is why i
had the short debugging session to get startx/.xinitrc/.xserverrc
working on my box that i posted in my email.  At some point in the way
back, I left things in a bad state.

I got it.  Thank you. I can start up Xwindows with OpenBox from a Windows shortcut now.  
I still don't have a workspace pager.  Is the problem me or is it OpenBox?

Openbox is just a WM.  It does not provide a panel, pager, or other 
desktop components.

these types of components can be used with openbox, if you want.
obconf allows you to set N number of desktops, dock location etc.
the openbox website has a lot of information regarding usage and
configuration ( i.e. i have openbox run 3 desktops and I mapped the
<windows-meta-key>-F1-3 to switch between them -- i also run a taskbar
(tint2) that allows me to do the same as well as have systray)
