I am having more success in getting my initial windows looking the way I think they should when I use xlaunch. However, at present on my system xlaunch has one show stopper: When I start XWin with it, XWin cannot start any items from the XWin menu (the one set up by .XWinrc). I click and nothing appears to happen. The Exit button (etc.) are active.
