Have you tried updating to 1.5.8-1 or a snapshot?

I was having crashes in 1.5.7-1 that went away when I upgraded to a pre-1.5.8 snapshot.

The mailing list archives may also be helpful as I recall others having emacs problems that went away with pre-1.5.8 snapshots.

There are a number of messages about X emacs crashing this week -- at last!  
I've been having this problem since I updated at the end of January, but I 
thought I'd messed something up because X was running when I did the update. 
  However, I just reinstalled "all" last week and emacs still crashes 
routinely.

Here's what I get out of the setup.log for versions:

initial 10/7/04 (worked wonderfully):
cygwin-1.5.5-1

1/27/04 (crashes started):
