Some time ago I was trying to install libwww-perl-5.61 under __W98__ with no
success.
The installation process wouldn't pass the 'robot' tests. I finally was able
to trace the problem to the 'tie' :

/home/arkadig/tmp$ vdir delme*
vdir: delme*: No such file or directory
/home/arkadig/tmp$ perl -e 'use  Fcntl;use  AnyDBM_File;tie %t1,
q(AnyDBM_File), ($_=q(/home/arkadig/tmp/delme)), O_CREAT|O_RDWR, 0640  or
Carp::croak("$_: $!");'
/home/arkadig/tmp/delme: Permission denied at -e line 1
/home/arkadig/tmp$ vdir ./delme*
-rw-r--r--    1 arkadig  unknown      3072 Nov 30 06:21 ./delme.pag
/home/arkadig/tmp$ rm ./delme*

By default NDBM_File is used. Force 'tie' to use SDBM_File:

/home/arkadig/tmp$ perl -e 'BEGIN { @AnyDBM_File::ISA = qw(SDBM_File) };use
Fcntl;use  AnyDBM_File;tie %t1, q(AnyDBM_File),
($_=q(/home/arkadig/tmp/delme)), O_CREAT|O_RDWR, 0640  or Carp::croak("$_:
$!");'
/home/arkadig/tmp$ vdir ./delme*
-rw-r--r--    1 arkadig  unknown         0 Nov 30 06:22 ./delme.dir
-rw-r--r--    1 arkadig  unknown         0 Nov 30 06:22 ./delme.pag

Thus the work-around for the installation problem is to insert

BEGIN { @AnyDBM_File::ISA = qw(SDBM_File) };

at the beginning of RobotRules/AnyDBM_File.pm

Where does this error come from, is it also from gdbm? Eventually
there is a check for a special set of permissions like 644 and at
Win98 is always 700 so an error is raised, maybe the 'wrong' error
text in gdbm?

What if you change the above snippet to:
main()
{
        DBM *dbp;
        dbp = dbm_open("xxx", O_RDWR|O_CREAT, 0700);
        if (dbp == NULL) perror("dbm_open");
}

The original poster has failures probably because he doesn't use 'ntsec'
in his CYGWIN= settings.

perl's dbm interface is handled by the gdbm library (in its ndbm
emulation mode). Unfortunately, gdbm(dbm-mode) has problems on FAT
drives (which is all W98 has...and you're running on W98).

Is it a dbm problem or is the following coincidental?

main()
{
	DBM *dbp;
	dbp = dbm_open("xxx", O_RDWR|O_CREAT, 0644);
	if (dbp == NULL) perror("dbm_open");
}
yields:
dbm_open: Permission denied

No, NT4.0 Sp6a

Why should it fail on Win98? There are no permissions which can be denied?
I have no idea. Unfortunately my wife has accidently clobbered my Win98
installation with a Linux evaluation CD last weekend, now she is running
Win2K on her box;)

Gerrit,

bash-2.05a$ perl -v

This is perl, v5.6.1 built for cygwin-multi

from           setup.log.full

I'm not a specialist on Windowz nor on Cigwin but aren't some libraries
different? I suspect that perl-interpreter/modules built on NT/W2K doesn't
always work correctly on W98. If this is true do I need to re-build perl? I
did this years ago under B20(?), it was pain but I was able to install LWP
afterwards.

Finally (may be) not related to LWP installation problem but is this
supposed to work this way?

bash-2.05a$ export PS1='\w$ '
~$ whoami
arkadig
~$ pwd
/cygdrive/c
~$ cd
~$ pwd
/cygdrive/c
~$ cd ~arkadig
/home/arkadig$ pwd
/home/arkadig
/home/arkadig$

Thx,
Arkadi

Gerrit,
    sorry, for not providing enough details:

Perl 5.6.1 the distribution that currently comes with Cygwin.

After sending mail to this list I noticed the new Cygwin version:
cygwin-1.3.5-3, so I installed it and then tried to install LWP again and
failed again.

'Works for me' - is it under W98?

Thx,
Arkadi

libwww-perl-5.60 builds without errors.

Have you reported this to cpan-testers ( http://testers.cpan.org/ ) too?

You appear to be directly connected to the Internet. I have some tests
that tries to access some sites on the net to verify that the new HTTP/1.1
support works as it should.

Do you want to enable these tests? [y] y

This package comes with some sample programs that I can try
to install in /usr/bin.

   Note that you can avoid these questions by passing
   the '-n' option to 'Makefile.PL'.

Do you want to install lwp-request? [y] y
Do you want to install lwp-mirror? [y] y
Do you want to install lwp-rget? [y] y
Do you want to install lwp-download? [y] y

The lwp-request program will use the name it is invoked with to
determine what HTTP method to use. I can set up alias for the most
common HTTP methods. These alias are also installed in
/usr/bin.

Do you want to install the GET alias? [y] y
Do you want to install the HEAD alias? [y] y
Do you want to install the POST alias? [y] y

Where does this error come from, is it also from gdbm? Eventually
there is a check for a special set of permissions like 644 and at
Win98 is always 700 so an error is raised, maybe the 'wrong' error
text in gdbm?

What if you change the above snippet to:
main()
{
        DBM *dbp;
        dbp = dbm_open("xxx", O_RDWR|O_CREAT, 0700);
        if (dbp == NULL) perror("dbm_open");
}

Is it a dbm problem or is the following coincidental?

main()
{
	DBM *dbp;
	dbp = dbm_open("xxx", O_RDWR|O_CREAT, 0644);
	if (dbp == NULL) perror("dbm_open");
}
yields:
dbm_open: Permission denied

No, NT4.0 Sp6a

Why should it fail on Win98? There are no permissions which can be denied?
I have no idea. Unfortunately my wife has accidently clobbered my Win98
installation with a Linux evaluation CD last weekend, now she is running

This is perl, v5.6.1 built for cygwin-multi
