My make also choked on cygwin/cygheap.cc with "implicit declaration of function
int memset(...)"
The problem is that the include path in winsup/Makefile.common starts with
-I. -I/usr/src/.../winsup/cygwin, but the <string.h> include file in winsup/cygwin/string.h
starts with:
#ifndef _CYGWIN_STRING_H
#define _CYGWIN_STRING_H
#include_next <string.h>
So the only string.h that is getting included is the local one (in winsup/cygwin/string.h),
which does not include the memset prototype.
I "solved" the problem by changing the cygwin/string.h file:
#include_next <string.h>
#ifndef _CYGWIN_STRING_H
#define _CYGWIN_STRING_H
This ensures that the next string.h that gets included will be the system one,
and not cygwin/string.h
I'm a complete newbie to cygwin so I don't know if this is the "correct" solution

Yes, you'd think the compiler would just treat it as a warning and continue
to compile -- but it doesn't. I did verify that the -Werror flag was not
being passed to g++. For example, if you try to compile a very simple
program like "main(){memset(0,0,0);}" with g++, you will see that the above
error message is displayed and the "a.exe" file is not generated -- i.e. the
compiler treats it as an error and aborts.

Hey Gerrit,
> O.k, I didn't build cygwin the last days, there were some changes, maybe
> a bug? Do you use sources from CVS?
No bug, I just should have RTFF. After installing the source with the setup
program, I naively tried to build it with:
cd /usr/src/cygwin-1.3.3-2
./configure
make
Oops. Seems the right way is something like this:
mkdir cygwin-out
cd cygwin-out
/usr/src/cygwin-1.3.3-2/configure --srcdir=/usr/src/cygwin-1.3.3-2
make
In my own defense I think the README file in /usr/src/cygwin* should make
this explicit. Anyways, the make works like a charm now.
Sorry for wasting your time,
Kevin

With this build script the installation target dir is somewhere below
your builddir called 'inst/usr' or similar (you may set it where you
like it to be at the top of the script, maybe /tmp/cygwin/usr).
You should delete $instprefix/usr/lib/libm.a .../libg.a .../libc.a
and make symlinks to libcygwin then:
cd $instprefix/usr/lib/
rm libm.a libc.a libg.a
ln -s libcygwin.a libm.a
ln -s libcygwin.a libc.a
ln -s libcygwin.a libg.a
You may look at the buildscript there is an option 'package', modify it
if needed (no dejagnu built?) and pack the installed binaries, headers
and libs (-> cygwin-build package) and copy/move the packages to '/'.
Unpack them. It will fail to unpack cygwin1.dll because it is in use.
You need to terminate all cygwin processes (services, shells, ...) and
copy cygwin1.dll from the installation directory to x:\cygwin\bin, to
clear memory you should reboot your machine now.

well Ladies
the compiling of cygwin-1.3.3-2 has been performed
with the script you gave me "cygwin-build"
but after making cygwin-build build
and cygwin-build Install
the libary "libcygwin.a" keept unchanged, also my testprogram wasn't
affected from my
patch i wrote in newlib/ctype which is enhanching character recognition
above the character value 0x80
so what is still wrong???
Felix
----------------------------
without using cygwin-build, and using configure, make, make install, the
following was found:
E:\cygwin\usr\src\cygwin-1.3.3-2\i686-pc-cygwin\winsup\cygwin\fhandler.h
"impicit declaration of function int memset(....)"
i really don't know why the compiler sees this function as an int function
configure also claimed the same....
(See attached file: config.log)
but compiling newlib didn't made any troubles
so what is wrong.... couldn fix the problem even by including memory.h in
the affected files
i also tried to get another package from redhat, but server refused
download from
ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/pc/gnuwin32/cygwin/mirrors/cygnus/latest/cygwin/

Hmmm, ich habe keine Probleme wenn ich die aktuelle Version vom CVS
baue, ich habe ein Skript zu Hause, das enthält ein paar Parameter, das
stammt von Ch. Wilson, lad es dir mal runter cygwin-build:
ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/pc/gnuwin32/cygwin/porters/Wilson_Charles_S/robert-collins/buildscripts/

Eine Version mit deinem Patch wirst du nicht bekommen, du musst schon
cygwin mit den gepatchten newlib libs verlinken.

Geht ganz schnell.

O.K.
