Win98se and using SSHD as a TRUE service

I would like to say that if I knew how to code I would be the first to
volunteer to develope a fix.  At this point I can mostly offer my time as a
tester more then anything else.

The issue is this:

I put the following entry into the registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices]
"C:\\CYGWIN\\BIN\\BASH.EXE --login -c /usr/sbin/sshd"

This starts SSHD as a service when the system boots but the problem is that
SSHD dosen't register itself as a true service. I can say this because I use
a tool to see the processes currently running on the box called WinTOP which
you can find here:

According to WinTOP my "VNC" process is a "system process" but my "SSHD" is
a normal user level process.

I would not care either way but for the fact that if I login via SSHD then
the next time the user logs out SSHD will DIE!

Everythign else with regards to SSHD work VERY well.

Last tested with:
Win98se
Cygwin 1.3.4-4
OpenSSH 3.0p1-1

The elegant reusable solution would require the creation of a cygrunsrv-like
program for 9x/Me. Whilst none of the programming would be particularly
challenging, the whole program would basically have to be rewritten, because
the 9x/Me service control manager is 100% different from the NT/2k SCM. You
are increasingly unlikely to find anyone who can be bothered to write the
program, now that the 9x/Me product line is obsolete.

A quick and dirty fix would be to add a call to RegisterServiceProcess[See
Win32 API docs] in the initialization code of ssh, and recompile. That would
give you a version of ssh which would fix your problem (but wouldn't run on
NT/2k).

I tried adding this code I grabbed from the VNC source:

I put this in the file called daemon.c but I am unable to compile.

If I was to guess the problem lies in the fact that you can't mix and match
Win32 code with Unix code.

It looks like porting cygrunsrv to Win95 may be the only solution.

Le me know if there is any other avenue I can try.

The whole point of cygnus is (kindof) mixing windows & unix code.
Perhaps adding #include <windows.h> would solve your problems?

The idea here is to have SSHD start as a true service in Win9x such that it
will NOT dies when a user logs out.  To do this the process must make the
system call "RegisterServiceProcess" which only exist in Win95, Win98 and
WinMe.

I had a go at compiling what you sent, obviously I can't compile it
properly
 but I can test the syntax anyway.
 I just had to remove #include "includes.h"
 For me, gcc version 2.9-cygwin-990830, I got similar errors to you and
others 
 which I got rid of by fixing includes ... (except for one).

  1. compiler doesn't like // comments

  2. compiler doesn't like declaration of variables except at start of

Ok I introduced your changes and I was able to complie SSHD.EXE.

Unfortunately it dosen't work.  When I checked with WinTOP the proccess is
still NOT listed as a service.

This is a show stopper for me.  For example if I am using SSHD on a machine
while the user is also on the machine and for some reason the user desides
to logout, then SSHD dies and my session with it... worse I can no loger get
back in since SSHD is dead!  So much for remote admin.

It should be noted that SSHD dose not die so long as I don't use it.  The
user can open and close a session on this machine without killing SSHD.  But
if I use SSHD, even if only for a second, then the next time the user logs
out SSHD will die.

The goal here for me is to use cygwin for remote administration.  Almost ALL
machines are Win98se and I can't change that fact.  This bug if you can call
it that realy has me dead in the water.

Unfortunatly I am a sysadmin, I am not a developer and I don't have the
skillset to fix this bug/problem myself.

Am I realy the only one that wants to use SSHD and Cygwin on Win9x
platforms?

You added the code to the parent's branch.  It's the child which
has to register as service.  Move the code (not the sleep(!))
to the `case 0:' branch, right before the `break;'.
