Newbie saying HI!

I just joined the list so I'd like to say "Hi" to everyone.

My first question is what happened to the directory:
ftp://ftp.franken.de/pub/win32/develop/gnuwin32/cygwin/porters/Hirmke_Michae
l/
It's empty.

I downloaded a man package and have compiled it though I'm still trying to
figure out how the configure script works.  One of the problems I see is
the the Makefiles generated don't know about the .exe extentions.  Is there
any general option in the configure scripts which would correctly handle the
.exe extensions?

Are there any orientation tutorials which can get someone fimilular with
wintel development up to speed with the gnu dev tools? Especially
autoconfic/
configure/etc..  How about general guidelines for porting gnu programs?

I love to play with dirrerent fs hierarchy structures.  Which lines of which
files
should I look for when I want to change where files go?  I am vaguely
fimilular
with autoconif and configure scripts.  What change do most of you make to
redirect where programs and config files are installed and assumed to be?

I'm curious why man wasn't included in the cygwin user tools?  The files are
there but not man.exe itself although it can be had through someone else.
Man is essential for developing in order to figure out various function
calls.

Has there been any thought about a wholy native specialized version of gcc
under win32?    GCC is looking more and more attractive for development
under
win32 or any operating system.   I know it would be alot of work but I'm
interested
if anyone has any whimsical thoughts about it.

This has been available for a few years now -- it's called Mingw (thanks
to the great work by Colin Peters, Jan-Jaap vanderHeijden et al). See

Perl and cygwin

The ActivSate version of perl does not now and, to the best of my
knowledge, has never, used the Cygwin DLL.

activestate perl is a native windows port. AFAIK, it is a dynamically linked
version (that is, it uses .dll's for the modules). Perl (5.005_03) can be
compiled with cygwin/egcs, as both a statically linked perl and a dynamically
linked perl; however, you have to patch the source. See
http://cygutils.netpedia.net/ . Perl5.6, due Real Soon Now (tm), will hopefully
compile with cygwin out-of-the-box.

There is a problem with my local ftp server. Since upgrading my Linux
distribution anonymous ftp access is possible, but an ls doesn't show
any files or directories. Because the above mentioned directory on
ftp.franken.de is mirrored from my server here, all the files have been
deleted, because the mirror tool thought, they have been deleted in the
source directory, too 8-/
I'm about to figure out, how I can get around this problem - but please
be patient, it seems to be a bit difficult. If anyone has any idea on how
to solve this problem - suggestions are welcome.

But be aware - this is behind a leased line with only 33.6K, so it might
be very slow!

distribution anonymous ftp access is possible, but an ls doesn't show
any files or directories. Because the above mentioned directory on
ftp.franken.de is mirrored from my server here, all the files have been
deleted, because the mirror tool thought, they have been deleted in the
source directory, too 8-/

be patient, it seems to be a bit difficult. If anyone has any idea on how
to solve this problem - suggestions are welcome.

Less and More Color

A general *nix question:

Why doesn't less correctly handle color when I do a
vdir --color | less
although
vdir --color | more
does handle the colors properly.

It can't be that less doesn't handle color since when I do
man(while uses less) keywords apprear in color.

It _is_ less!

Try:

	ls -l --color | less -r

-r is the command line switch for raw input handling. If you don't
use it, less converts the control sequences generated by the color
option of ls into it's special control sequence output.

`more' doesn't "handle" this sequences but is to dumb to detect them.
