I've managed this by resurrecting an idea I had back in 1998, updated for the new millenium. My idea was shot down by other (then) Cygnus employees but since they are now gone and I'm in charge of the project it seems like a good idea to dust it off and try again. In a nutshell, what cygwin now does is start pipe reads in another thread. If a signal arrives, the thread (and the read) is terminated. Depending on how Windows is implemented, it's *possible* that there will be data loss in this scenario. It would be very very hard to to prove that is the case, however. Please check out the latest snapshot and report here if there are problems. I haven't yet tried this on Windows 9x class systems so it's entirely possible that there is a problem there. If this looks good, I will probably release a cygwin 1.3.18 fairly soon. cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/ ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 25+ messages in thread

I've just sent the dll to someone to try out on a 9x system. One thing about the possible data loss: Is that true data loss, like some bytes won't make it trough the pipe, or will that only result in a delay because the bytes have to be send again? I will do some more thourough tests and will report back. It's true data loss but it is very very unlikely that it will ever be hit. Btw, thanks for the feedback. It's an interesting datapoint. It seems to mean that the context switch implicit in introducing a thread into the pipe read is substantially less than the 10ms delay we were adding in the old scheme. This probably makes sense but... this is Windows, so.... cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/ ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 25+ messages in thread

Attached find cygcheck output and the config.status output upto where 'sed' gets unhappy and enters a repeating loop This happens when running a bash shell in an rxvt terminal config.status runs to completion from a bash shell in the Win2k cmd.exe terminal I have marked where the output differs from the successful run in make.log This is repeatable Norman [-- Attachment #2: cygcheck.log --] [-- Type: application/octet-stream, Size: 43076 bytes --] Cygwin Win95/NT Configuration Diagnostics Current System Time: Thu Dec 12 21:52:42 2002 Windows 2000 Professional Ver 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 3 Path: D:\usr\local\bin D:\\bin D:\bin c:\WINNT\system32 c:\WINNT c:\WINNT\System32\Wbem c:\PROGRA~1\Eps11\bin c:\bin . The hung process (sed) is actually not hung, but connected to stdin instead of file. The root cause is that when config.status is processed by bash, then sometimes `` construct forgets all output, causing different generated file names to be empty, thus connecting sed to stdin instead of some file. Following command line reproduces the bug for me: while true; do test "`echo foo`" = "foo" || echo failed; done When this command is run inside bash, then "failed" lines appear quite regularly. The bug is reproducible only with /bin/bash, /bin/sh works reliably. Pavel P.S. I'm leaving today, I won't answer emails till January 6th, sorry.. So, there is a snapshot up there which may or may not solve the problem. The above command doesn't die for me now, so I guess that's something. I'll check the prevous snapshot tomorrow to see if it actually fails for me. I've been a little sick for a couple of weeks now and attempting to stay with my "work on real job in the day and cygwin at night" scenario is not working too well. In the meantime, please try the current snapshot. It is probably slightly (but possibly unoticeably) slower but it should be very much less likely to lose data in a pipe. The latest snapshot also has some new inline assembly functions courtesy of some cygwin-developers (Gary R. Van Sickle and Thomas Pfaff) which might cause a little bit of a boost, too. cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/ ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 25+ messages in thread

Examining the processes when the ./configure hangs reveals that hanging leaf seems to be always 'sed', running as a part of config.status script creating Makefiles etc. I'm running XPPro, the same results were achieved when running configure inside xterm or inside FSFemacs (X version). With the current cygwin1.dll I tried time cat <hugefile> | nice -0 dd of=/dev/null time cat <hugefile> | nice --1 dd of=/dev/null where hugefile ~ 100MB, and got times roughly 1m20s with the 2nd instruction marginally faster. Then switched to the snapshot cygwin1-20021210.dll and shaved a minute yes a minute off the times. Then tried creating new files as in time cat <hugefile> | nice -0 dd of=hugefile2 time cat <hugefile> | nice --1 dd of=hugefile3 (this took about 30s each) and checked md5sums. Not a byte out of place. Fergus P.S. Thanks to thomas for these good diagnostic scripts. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/ ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 25+ messages in thread

If I understand the problem and solution (which I marginally do), and Win9x vs. WinNT/XP (which nobody really does), this ***~2.66x*** speedup should be even greater on NT/XP. I'm giddy with anticipation over what this might do to configure times etc. This may be the coolest thing since sliced time. -- Gary R. Van Sickle Brewer. I've also been using kde (Kmail), gzip with piped input, cat, less and also a few other tailor made apps with no problems. If anything it's a bit faster ;)
