I've made test versions of gcc 3.3.1 (and the accompanying gcc-mingw
package) available via setup. This version is the 3.3.1 release plus
the usual cygwin + mingw patches -- most of which come from Danny Smith.
The set of custom patches necessary for cygwin and mingw is shrinking
all of the time. gcc 3.4 should be much better in this regard.

Anyway, it seems to work fine. Usual caveats apply.

Problems go to the cygwin mailing list as always.

But you know that.

There is an error in the gcc-mingw preremove script.
The line "echo cd /usr" should be "cd /usr".

Max.

Is this new gcc supposed to be ABI compatible with 3.2.x? Because I
can't link in libraries compiled with an older version of cygwin g++.

/c/temp/cppunit-1.8.0/src/cppunit/TestSucessListener.cpp: undefined
reference to `___gxx_personality_v0'
/c/temp/cppunit-1.8.0/src/cppunit/../../include/cppunit/TestListener.h:33:
undefined reference to `__Unwind_Resume'

I get about 200 of those.

Oh, and my cygcheck took 3.4seconds.

What happens if you use 'fabi-version=1' ? '-fabi-version=0' ?

Also, what does the following command show:

g++ -E -dM - < /dev/null | awk '/GXX_ABI/ {print $3}'

gcc-3.2-3 gives "102"

Ok, it's not really an ABI change. It's just that the newer g++ doesn't
provide/require the "___gxx_personality_v0" or "__Unwind_Resume"
symbols. So, any library produced with 3.2-3 will not link into an app
compiled with 3.3.1-1.

c-lex.h is missing in the source package.

It's not available in the CVS repository on gcc.gnu.org, AFAICT.
Nothing that I build uses it, so this shouldn't be an issue. Apparently
objc builds are broken for 3.3.1.

Broken? I compiled the source package from mingw.org and at least the
'hello world' test in objc works fine.

Is there some more information about this somewhere?

If you check out the sources from the gcc repository you will note that
c-lex.h is not available on the 3.3 branch.

>Is there some more information about this somewhere?

I don't have any information. Like I said, AFAICT, this file isn't
necessary for my build. Maybe Danny has some insight. Perhaps he added
c-lex.h into his source package since he builds objective-c.

It is not in the 3.3.1 archive I got from mingw.org but the version of
objc in the 3.3.1-1 source package distributed via the cygwin mirrors
requires c-lex.h which is not included in the original 3.3.1 package
from gnu.org or the CVS as you found.

Hmmm, I guess objc-parse.c is meant to be regenerated and not to be
fetched readily from CVS, anyway also objc-parse.y in the 3.3.1-1
tarball is dated 01.06.2002 which seems pretty old (my versions date
is 14.05.2003).

I used the latest available MinGw version now again (just the objc
subdirectory) and it builds without problems. I did a diff on the two
directories and they are different. Probably your gcc/objc-parse.y
and gcc/objc-parse.c were not updated recently?

Now I wonder if it is broken for you because of this or don't you
build it anyway because it is broken elswhere? That is why I asked
for more information about the breakage.

HTH,
Gerrit

Getting this when running make check on the sources I found at
mingw.org:

                === objc tests ===

Running target unix

                === objc Summary ===

# of expected passes 1153

I guess it's time to be blunt since you are not getting it: I don't
care. I'm not going to build objective-c. I ask periodically for some
volunteer to take this odious gcc maintainership duty from me. I can't
believe that you would think that I'd be willing to add to it.

If it doesn't build from the sources that I distributed then getting it
working is an exercise for whoever wants to build it.

Do you understand now? I'm not interested in discussing your problems
with objc. That means this is my last message in this thread.

over and out.

While you are obviously quite excited about this, you haven't provided
any details. It seems like you could easily provide a test case for
this. If you want someone to investigate this problem, that will be a
requirement.

Since cygwin itself uses unnamed structures and unions, I need to
know exactly what is not working for you.

Hallo Christopher,

The support for unnamed structure/union is brocken!

The warning only (-Wall) is generated and corresponding field is ignored!

The old GCC compiler (before 2.95.3 if I not mistake) reports the error.

In the previous 2.95.3 .. 3.2 and in the current GCC shipped with CYGWIN
it was supported properly.

That's fine by me (although Ralf will probably be a little torqued; qt &
kde ...) -- I just wanted to know if I had to recompile all of my
packages, which are mostly library-providers, AGAIN for the fourth time
in less than a month.

At which point it would've gotten ugly.

But, it appears that I don't have to do that, except for ncurses
(cygncurses++7.dll).  So I'm happy...

Ada, Java, ObjC are affected as well as C++. Also, note that any C++ code
that uses iostreams or STL will be using exceptions. Oh yes, and new/delete use
exceptions.
But garden variety C should not be affected.
Linking to w32api dll's certainly isn't affected.

FWIW, C++ optimisation is so much better with gcc-3.3 than with 3.2 it would
probably pay to recompile C++ libs anyway, even if the exception model hadn't
changed

It is a build time issue. You use --disable-sjlj-exceptions or not
to configure gcc, should be compatible when using it (with the caveats
mentioned above). IIRC dwarf2 and sjlj exceptions are exclusive.

So, just to make sure I understand...

This "problem" only affects C++ code -- and only C++ code which uses
exceptions. If a C++ library uses exceptions, it should be recompiled
with the new compiler. If a C++ _program_ uses excetions -- or uses a
(C++) library which uses exceptions -- then it should be
recompiled/relinked too, but only after the suspect lib has been
recompiled with gcc-3.3.1, as well.

But C code (libraries, apps, etc) are unaffected, and need no recompiling.

Right?

Ok, are there command-line switches to change the exception mechanism
used? I would like to be able to use cygwin gcc 3.2 to build libraries
that work with cygwin gcc 3.3.

gcc 3.2-3 used Dwarf2 exceptions, which worked most of the time. (In fact,
I don't recall any bug reports at all on cygwin list). But it didn't work
with w32api callbacks, nor with some combinations of compiler switches
(notably -mcpu=i586 or -mno-accumulate-outgoing-args and
-fomit-frame-pointer).

cygwin gcc-3.3.1 uses setjmp-longjmp exception mechanism,
mingw does too and has done since gcc-3.2.1.

The two undefined references are Dwarf2 specific. The corresponding
SjLj symbols are __gxx_personality_sj0 and __Unwind_SjLj_Resume.
