I had asked a similar question in Sept. It is also discussed in Oct.
Goto the mail archives sort by subject and look for subject of "pathname
conversion" dated 22 Sep 1997.

goto the "RE: pathname conversion". Look at the Sergey Okhapkin
response dated 23 Sep 1997. Also, look at the debash-1.1.tar.gz file
located at http://www.horus.cix.co.uk/download .
