Subject: Minor problem with 0905 snapshot an Win98SE
Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 23:42:00 -0000	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <19990909164749.24093.rocketmail@web804.mail.yahoo.com> (raw)
Message-ID: <19990930234200.zgJZGJidFaxEv13XRxccMkvk4YKkZI-ykScKnSzHTnM@z> (raw)

I downloaded the 0905 snapshot (cygwin-inst-19990905.tar.gz) a couple of days
ago and installed both at work on NT4SP4 and at home on Win98SE. So far,
everything works well at work on NT4. At home, however, I've run across an
oddity.

Normally, I use an X build of rxvt with bash for my command line work. On NT,
my build of rxvt works just fine. On 98SE, however, the same build of rxvt
sometimes results in a stackdump. Here are the symptoms:

If I start rxvt from a command.com prompt, I get a stackdump every time. If I
start rxvt from a bash prompt in a normal console window, it works fine. If I
then try to exit the bash running in the console window, it appears to hang for
a few seconds (60?), then issues a message that it's waiting for child
processes using tty0 to exit. It will continue to issue that message until I
exit the child process(es). As soon as I do, the console window closes.

The problem appears to be related to some tty changes. What else can I do to
help diagnose the problem? Would the stackdump file help? It basically says
that there was an unhandled exception (0xC0000005) in kernel32.dll, as I
recall.

On the positive side, for the first time that I can remember, I saw color in
bash in a console window prior to the screen scrolling. I have my prompt and
directory listings set to display in color and until the 0905 snapshot, the
color didn't display until the cursor reached the bottom of the console window
and scrolled the display. In fact, with the exception of the above problem, the
general tty behavior in a console window seems to be much improved under '98
with this snapshot.

Thanks,

Rick
