why is make so bloody slow (for me)

I'm running Windows 2000 on a PIII 700 with 256mb of PC100 ECC RAM.
It's not the machine, obviously.  It's probably win2k, but I thought
I'd ask...

I'm running the V1.0 of cygwin.

The command "make --debug" gives this output:

There is a 10 second pause after each of the above 4 lines is
printed.  The overall effect is that it takes a good minute or two to
get to doing some real work.

I upgraded my processor and NT (from 4.0sp6a) around the same time,
but I can swear it never was this slow.

I have a bunch of $(shell ...) in lines my makefile.
I have the environment variable MAKE_MODE set to UNIX.

Ideas?

I'm using W2K since B3 and I never saw _that_ one. On my machine
PII 450, it runs fast enough. On the first glimps you wouldn't
see a difference to NT4.

So I would like to ask some questions:

- Do you have network paths in $PATH?
- Related: Are you working in a folder which is connected
  as drive?
- Are you logged on as Admin, Power User, Normal User?
- Are you using a virus checker? Which one?
- Could you please send output of cygcheck -s -r -v to me?

Maybe, the solution is quite simple but how knows...

It was disabled at the time.  McAfee v4.5 (the only McAfee certified
for win2k).

Could you do me two favors?

- Please try that `make -debug' with the latest snapshot from 
  the sourceware server.
  Do you see a clear speed up?
  Does the SIGCHLD problem still exist?

- If changing the dll doesn't help, could you please strace
  `make -debug' and send the output as .gz file directly
  to my mail address (not to the mailing list, please)?

Nope.  I also notice that ^C no longer stops the make, too.

Btw, I had to restore the original dll.  The newest snapshot caused
make to hang (I waited 5 minutes).

Cygwin CD licensing?

Redhat,

I'm using the cygwin tools from the Cygwin CD on a consulting project.  I'm
just writing shell scripts and tcl, so I'm not using the GNUPro tools, or
linking to the cygwin.dll.  But I need to advise my customer exactly what
they need to do to use the CD at their site.

I understand that the installer (hence the CD) is copyrighted by
Cygnus/Redhat, and isn't under the GPL.  Therefore, I can't distribute
copies of the CD.  That's fine- my customer can certainly afford to buy
their own.

But the more important question, usually answered by a license, is what can
our customer do with a single copy of the CD?  Can you install it on exactly
one machine?  Do you need one copy per user?   Can you install it on
multiple machines from a single CD?

Given the very reasonable price, it doesn't really matter that much which
option it is, but I'd like to give them the "official" answer.

I believe the CD is site-licensed, so each customer can install it on
as many of *their* machines as they want.  The installer is not free,
but the software it installs is, so once it's installed there isn't
any proprietary software on the PC anyway, so what's stopping them
from installing it elsewhere also?

of question on a daily basis.

Just to make sure, you are not using a network drive to build on, are you?  
For me, doing that in Windows NT (using NFS or clearcase MVFS network 
filesystems) makes builds run a factor of 10-50 slower, even though they are 
fast as ever under Linux or FreeBSD on the same physical box.  I chalk it up 
to poor network code in Microsoft OS.

No networks drives in my path, nor is my current working directory on
a remote machine.  I do have some mounted, though.
