I had exactly the same problem with both the 0526 and 0527 snapshots, while the
0525 snapshot (which I'm currently using) works fine. I was unable to start
*any* cygwin application with either of those two snapshots installed.

Same experience here; 0525 works, 0526 and 0527 give the said error.
The permissions are not the problem AFAIK.

Chris, is there a production version of Cygwin? Like cygwin-1.1.1.tar.gz?

That's reasonable. I wasn't very accurate in saying "current snapshot".
I really meant "the Cygwin that I build every day on my machine".
I appreciate your trying to check out the latest snapshot.

I would imagine that Chris's "snapshot" is a direct build from the CVS
repository. This build has not been released due to problems with the build
process that need to be manually corrected currently to finish the build.

Since Chris indicated that he could not duplicate it with the "current
snapshot," I was just trying to make sure I did my due diligence by
attempting to reproduce the problem with the latest snapshot.

Because rebooting would clean up any turds that may have been lying
around :,) Remember, this is still Windows -- I've seen problems like
this go away by rebooting.

This should be almost expected to happen at times since the snapshots are built
automatically and not tested. The purpose for the snapshots is for people to
test them to see if they work. If you notice, there are no snapshots for
05-28, 05-29, 05-30 or 05-31, this is because somethings broke in the build
process. Steps have been taken to correct the problem. I also received the
above error with this snapshot. I built and tested 05-31 just to be sure that
the problem is currently fixed and it is, but the build process is still
broken.

This would be the normal workaround if your living on the bleeding edge.

Why would you even expect a reboot to take care of the problem?

One possible reason:
You have untar'd the dll to a NTFS filesystem and the NTFS permissions
doesn't allow executing the DLL. You should look into the security tab
in the properties box of the DLL and see, if execution is allowed. If
you like to keep it simple, try setting `Full Control' to `Everyone'.

All of my 1.1.1 cygwin1.dll's (both working and non-working):
cygwin1.dll.orig (original 1.1.1 cygwin1.dll)
cygwin1-20000524.dll
cygwin1-20000524-2.dll
cygwin1-20000525.dll
cygwin1.dll (same as cygwin1-20000525.dll)
cygwin1-20000527.dll
are set to "`Full Control' to `Everyone'".
So, I think that this problem must be caused by some other reason.
Thanks,
Jason

When trying to reproduce the problem reported in the "Re: Bug in 'du'
and 'find'?" email with the latest snapshot, I got the following error
dialog displayed:
--- Begin of Dialog ---
bash.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK
to terminate the application.
--- End of Dialog ---
When I backed out to cygwin1-20000525.dll the above problem went away.
Even after a reboot, I could not get cygwin1-20000527.dll to initialize
properly.
See attached for my cygcheck output.
Thanks,
Jason
