The build of GNU make v3.77 doesn't work.

Here's a valid makefile (between - - -s):

- - -
string = abc

echo.exe:
     @echo $(string)
- - -

Here's the error:

', needed by `echo.exe'.  Stop.t `

Note that this message is from a corrupt buffer. The "t" at the end
is from some string that is being overwritten. We can see more of
the buffer using the makefile:

- - -
string = abc

e:
     @echo $(string)
- - -

Here's the new error:

', needed by `e'.  Stop.e target `

This error has been previously posted. The reply from Ravi Chari suggested
trying tr -d '\r' < Makefile > makefile.nocr.

This does not solve the problem.

Ian

PS: Here's the cygcheck -s -v -r output:

Just one observation: You're not using B20.1. You're using cygwin 1.1.1.

Ok, another one: I will bet that you still have \r line endings in
your file. Try the 6/1 snapshot as was suggested in recent email
to see if that solves your problem.

V1.1 overlaid with cygwin-inst-20000601.tar.gz

has an occasional problem with include files
which I have copied into

/usr/local/include/

untill I run them through a dos2unix filter.

Other then that ( xcept for my gdb problem ) I am having
great SUCCESS with this snapshot.

Many Thanks to you
and the rest of the Cygwin Team:-))

It's at least tested on the binary mode side. I've been using it recently. It
is working for UNIX style line endings.

I posted two different messages and did not receive any responses.

I will, of course, eventually make a new release available. It would be nice
if it was actually tested.

So, does this mean that the snapshot is working ok. I thought I some posts of
it working for those that were having problems. It might be worth making the
distribution just so that the newbies will have the benefit of the attempted
fix.

I've received very little feedback on the snapshot.

Now, download the most recent snapshot from
http://sourceware.cygnus.com/cygwin/snapshots/ and install that.

Chris, can we make a new distrobution?

Cheers,
Earnie.

Thanks for the advice. I have cleaned up the registry, uninstalled cygwin
and perfomed a new installation (using cygwin-1.1.1.tar.gz) , this time using
the setup.exe program.

Unfortunately my problem remains.

I believe you're right about it being a setup problem, unfortunately I haven't
a clue what it might be.I have tried using the old GNU 3.75 make.exe (which
previously ran with b20), and it has the same problem.

FYI: I'm using make on a Java project. If I can't resolve the problem with the cygwin
make I can always resort to nmake. However it's nicer to use GNU than MS!

Make works fine. It's your setup that's wrong.

I just tried this with make version 3.77 and I get `abc' as output.

The first item in your path *must always* be the directory containing the
cygwin1.dll and executables.

This is an invalid mount entry. You can use regedit to delete this record.
You can also try to `umount c' to see if it removes this entry.

You may use *regedit only* to remove this following set of registry entries.
They are not hurting your current setup but also aren't needed any longer.

I find it interesting that you're trying to use make when you don't have the
gcc compiler set and binutils installed.

You've mixed b20 with Version 1.1. Albeit the cygwin1.dll is backward
compatible with the binaries that use it, the object libraries that you might
use when building programs are not. If you intend to use Cygwin for
development you need to do a full upgrade.
