I downloaded inetutils-1.3.2-11 from a mirror.  (I can't get any file
from ftp://www.cygwin.com/pub/cygwin . It is on purpose or a
mis-config?)  However, when I

# net stop inetd

replaced inetd and then

# net start inetd

a dos window pops up. If I kill the window, inetd dies. Anything
wrong with my setup? cygcheck results attached below.

My current work around (for inetutils-1.3.2-10) is to telnet in and
use runemacs to start XEmacs (console-type 'x) and call up sshd from
XEmacs.

All sessions started by ssh is OK as far as stdout goes.

I tried to use run to start sshd w/o any success.

Did you check the "Allow service to interact with desktop" setting
in the service control panel as Egor suggested yesterday just for
testing purposes? Uncheck it.

Well, I have a strange setting. I want to interact with the desktop.
I am sitting in front of an NT box and using vncviewer to connect to
Xvnc running on a Linux machine. The nice thing about this setting is
that if the NT box crashes (which happens every a couple of hours when
I am playing with vision hardwares), it doesn't kill my XEmacs along
with other stuff.

I use M-x remote-compile to compile programs. (Basically
ssh NTBOX "cd $PWD; exec nmake -k" )

I want to get stdout (stderr if it applies) into my XEmacs buffer and
still see standard window's popup (some error messages insist to pop
up.)

I was thinking that if I could get

  start.dwFlags = STARTF_USESHOWWINDOW;
  start.wShowWindow = SW_HIDE;

into LPSTARTUPINFO before inetd forks the first client, everything
should be OK. However, I can't find an obvious place to insert the
code.

You will not find that anywher in the inetd code. inetd uses fork/exec
which is in Cygwin handled by calling some dubious Windows functions
including CreateProcess. If you want to add that change to inetd you're
on your own since you would have to rewrite the call of the child
process completely by yourself. Be aware that that will heavily influence
interaction with Cygwin processes up to a full disfunctionality.

You don't have to recompile it. Just start setup.exe again and
download inetutils-1.3.2-11 which should have arrived on the
mirrors. Don't forget to stop the inetd service before starting
setup.exe.

I'm somewhat surprised. I just checked your above program and
it worked fine over inetd/telnet with Egor's patch. I checked both,
with and without -mno-cygwin.

It works for me too, but is there another solution? One problem is that
I'm not sitting at the desktop. Another more serious problem is that
programs which process the output stream don't work when run through the
inetd.

E.g. The following code when compiled with gcc --mno-cygwin (or cl)
doesn't have any output to process when run through the inetd:

  #include <stdio.h>

  int main()
  {
    char psBuffer[128];
    FILE *output;

    if ((output = _popen("nm a.exe", "r")) == NULL ) exit(1);
    while(!feof(output))
      if(fgets(psBuffer, 128, output) != NULL) printf(psBuffer);
    printf("\nProcess returned %d\n", _pclose(output));
  }

This problem is affecting a non-cygwin program that we use, so we have
to log on locally to use this program. :(

??? It did work when I've just tested it. Did you in fact recompile
inetutils?

Thanks for that patch!

I have applied it to inetutils. It works pretty good. I've just uploaded
inetutils-1.3.2-11 to sourceware.

i believe this is due to some net.exe "feature". it seems that if it
runs out of console window, it creates new console and outputs
everything there. it's can easily seen by setting "Allow Service to
interact with desktop" for inetd service. when you run in your
telnet or ssh session 'net start some_big_service' you'll see console
window with net.exe output popping up on your desktop.

the following simple patch to inetd solved this problem for me. Corinna,
can you please consider it?
