HI-
cygwin is really useful. good job.
but i am having a problem i haven't found adeqate help in the archives.
i can ssh fine, and figured out how to use dump over ssh (to dump some linux
boxxen
to a Win2k backupserver) (once you ln -s /sbin/rmt.exe /etc/rmt ;-P)
but it hangs after 40k exactly each time.
uname -a

now, scp suffers a maybe similiar problem
after prompting for username@hostname password, i get
debug: Ssh2Common/sshcommon.c:274/ssh_common_special: Received SSH_CROSS_AUTHENTICATED
packet from connection protocol.
scp:Scp2/scp2.c:1443/new_stream_callback: notification: 0

just hangs. i have CYGWIN=ntsec tty .help!

Thanks

Please try the latest Cygwin 1.3.1 and the latest OpenSSH-2.5.2p2-3.
They might solve that.

hmm which user is the service running as ? if it is running as SYSTEM (the
default) then "chmod system /etc/ssh*" and see if that helps.

Hello,

I am using the latest cygwin modules from the installer. I have had cygwin
set up and working nicely for some time now, but today i just noticed that
sshd wasn't working anymore.

Originally, I had it set up so that sshd ran under inetd (by uncommenting
the line in inetd.conf). When it's set up this way, I always get
"Permission Denied" after I enter my password. I'm pretty sure the user
system is set up correctly, since I can log in using telnet without any
problems.

I tried running sshd as an independant service, however I can't get the
service to start. I get the following in the log:

--- BEGIN /var/log/sshd.log ---
Could not load host key: /etc/ssh_host_key
Could not load host key: /etc/ssh_host_rsa_key
Could not load host key: /etc/ssh_host_dsa_key
Disabling protocol version 1. Could not load host key
Disabling protocol version 2. Could not load host key
sshd: no hostkeys available -- exiting.
--- END /var/log/sshd.log ---

I reinstalled cygwin and re-generated the host keys, but it still doesn't
work. The files DO exist, and have the following permissions:
-rw------- 1 rsiklos Administ 672 Apr 9 12:36 ssh_host_dsa_key
-rw------- 1 rsiklos Administ 529 Apr 9 12:35 ssh_host_key
-rw------- 1 rsiklos Administ 887 Apr 9 12:35 ssh_host_rsa_key

Does anyone have any ideas or advice?

Thanks in advance,

Rob.

Tested port forwarding, -L works. Good.
My next problem is with the identity files. If I use -i identity, then ssh
tells me that permission denied on this file. I didn't yet take hands of the
new source, but I have a clue: maybe it is something to do with the
braindead O_BINARY option to open?

My other problem is with coolview and cygwin.dll. In order to get everything
working, I am doing the following now:
I have a copy of /gnuwin32/.../bin in /bin, and in bin I have cygwin.dll
bash2.exe (the orig. bash and sh is still bash.exe and sh.exe ) and ps.exe
from coolview. I have /bin in the path, and no /gnuwin32 stuff.
The shortcut on the desktop uses /gnuwin/.../bin/bash, as the one in /bin
still have the problem "no tty" despite CYGWIN_TTY being 1. I guess it is
due to the fact that the same directory contains the old cygwin.dll. Is
there any way to use only one of it?
bash2 have serious problems sourcing any shell script, including .bashrc,
this is why I don't use that. What to do?
I had very hard times figuring out which cygwin.dll use in which situation.

I will do a .exe using installshield or something like that in the near
future, containing the base cygwin, coolview, and ssh, and maybe other
useful stuff. I need these issues to be sorted out till then.

the only things i had to set to get ssh running was the /etc/passwd
and the only env.var. was that i set CYGWIN_TTY=1
after that ssh and scp works just great :)

(display i set just to :0 to get it on the local consol)

i've had same problem. this is what i know about it.

the 'mount con /dev/tty' works for some and not others.
to fix this, you could apply this patch.

diff -ur ssh-1.2.21/readpass.c ssh-1.2.21.stdin/readpass.c
--- ssh-1.2.21/readpass.c Fri Aug 22 10:28:32 1997

+  from_stdin = 1;

   else

this prevents it from trying to use /dev/tty or $DISPLAY altogether.

as for using $DISPLAY, it seems that one program can spawn()
another which can then open $DISPLAY but if one program fork/exec()s
another, that program won't be able to open $DISPLAY.

Hi!

I am trying to use ssh, but there are some problems I just can't cope with.
I have used the b-18 usertools.exe to create a basic environment. Than I
tar xvzf coolview in /TEMP. And ssh-1.2.21.win.bin.tar.gz in /
I made /etc/passwd and /etc/group with mkpasswd -l and mkgroups -l.
All the below I tried with every settings of PATH, /TEMP, /bin and
/usr/local/bin being in every order, every two of them and every one of
them, /bin beeing symlink once to /gnuwin32/..../bin, a copy in the other
time.
When I tried ssh, it told me that I don't have controlling tty or DISPLAY.
I have tried 3 things:
-the output of 'tty' told me that I'm on /dev/conin so I
mount \\\\.\\con: /dev/conin
mount \\\\.\\con: /dev/conout
mount \\\\.\\con: /dev/console
No way.
-I have tried to set DISPLAY to a nearby X terminal. I have managed to run
ssh-askpass alone, but ssh either didn't find random or getgroups in the
cygwin.dll. Setting LD_PRELOAD to the other instance didn't help. Is there a
DISPLAY setting which actually uses the NT's own display without having to
run an X server on it? I recall I've seen such a libX11 somewhere long ago.
-I have tried to use an identity file. ssh told me that it can't open it,
because permission denied. When I wanted to set the permissions with chown,
they continued to be 755, despite anything I tried.

PLEASE, anyone who could manage to actually use ssh tell me how to do that,
starting with a fresh NT 4.0 workstation or win95.

Thank you in advance.
