Can't you people do something about all the spam we get here,
it's rather annoying.

I was trying to bring to you attention that there is a virus attacking the
list. Don't open any email with attachments.
I am trying to figure out where my computer got hit.
I just recieved email from my mother (whom never has any connections to
virii) and openned a letter with an attachment from someone on the list.
So, the virus (sircam worm) is from the list.

Sure. (Note that your message represents the third or fouth
"spam-response" in the last week or so. Hence I am finally goaded into
responding in turn...I'll wait while you don your asbestos suit).

Step #1) don't respond to spam messages on list. Everybody saw the
spam. Everybody is annoyed by the spam. Please don't ADD to the @#$@!
spam by responding to it.

Step #2) File a lawsuit against MAPS. Their evil, dishonest tactics
(such as pirate DNS-pollution) have succeeded in basically driving ORBS
off the net. (Having eliminated the competition, they then began
charging for their service. Previously, both MAPS and ORBS were free.
Does this sound like any particular company you know <cough> Microsoft
<cough>)

In the past, cygwin used ORBS. But now we can't. Thus the increase in
spam. However, I haven't noticed multiple spams from the same address
(unless the multiples come VERY close together) -- so I assume that
someone -- probably cgf -- is manually blocking each spammer. Perhaps not.

But in any case, rest assured that the list maintainers are even MORE
annoyed by the spam than you are, and are doing everything they can to
stop it. But PLEASE don't add to the problem by replying, on-list, to
every spam that comes through the filter.

I've been doing IP whois and sending reports, and I've even had polite
promises of action from China telecom.  Korea is the worst actor now;
spam from there traces back to the Korean IP assignment agency, which
disclaims responsibility and gives broken links to what they claim is
the real whois site for Korea. I don't really want to consult my Korean
colleagues on this. If your ISP isn't willing to process legitimate
requests for blocks (few are, nowadays), you may have to join the
volunteer effort.

We do use the ORBS replacements that have cropped up but they don't seem
to be as effective as ORBS.

Yep. I block every spam I see. In fact, if I see spam in binutils, I
block it there and in many other mailing lists, including cygwin. So,
the cgf spam coverage should be pretty good.

However, when I am on vacation or away from the computer (a regrettably
rare event) you may see some spam flitting by.

I would suggest that the best response to spam is to send email to the
*proper* place, i.e. the originating site. Sending a "why doesn't
someone do something about this" response is just, as Chuck says, adding
to the annoyance.

The only thing that I hate more than spam itself is the responses to
spam. It's like yelling at someone in the library because they were
talking too loudly.

The SPAM filtering tradespace is interesting. A number of weeks ago, Mr.
Faylor indicated he was altering
the filter to reject more SPAM, and that this might lead to some problems
with the list getting some
legitimate mail. At that time, he received some complaints about legitimate
mail being blocked, and how
this was a worse thing than some SPAM getting through.

Now...

Wayne Keen

p.s. I keep waiting for the SPAM which offers IQ enlargement, I'll have my
credit card ready

Yes, you can not contribute to the spam by sending messages to mailing
lists complaining about it.

Sending email to the ISP who hosted the spam, on the other hand, is
perfectly appropriate.

We block hundreds of spam messages to sources.redhat.com every day. No
system is perfect however and some gets through.

Your options are to either live with it or unsubscribe.

Hi List

Am I the only one who just received a spam mail through this list
containing Gay video offers ;o)

Can we do anything about the spam mail?

So you're not intrigued by the challenge to read it through to the end and
make your first thousand $US? At least it exercises my mail reader and
shows it performs better in Russian than in French.
