Actually, from GNU/Linux:

$ which dir
/usr/bin/dir

`dir' is a GNU program which is equivalent to `ls -C -b'.  I don't
know whether he meant the dir in command.com or GNU dir, but `dir' is
not just a DOS-ism. (Sorry, I'm just feeling feisty today.)
