The tree of the alphabetically last directory will not
be listed by find on my W2k sp3 Computer. This bug is
not reproducable on a NT4 system.
Bellow is a protokoll of three subsequently issued commands
(through "Administrator" on machine "amd") on drive "x:"
which has 3 files in a directory "SICHERNG".
Greetings from Ralph

This should be fixed in tonight's snapshot.

Uhh... I wonder, might it be the same thing I wrote about here:
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2003-06/msg00504.html
This seems to have problems with the TWO last directories...
I need *more* free time; this time to check that snapshot.

To be correct, "94" should be "7915" or some such (taking differences
between "dir" and "find" into account).
:-7 Any ideas on how to go further with this?

Ahh... :?-[ - I'm taking things for granted.
In short:
I have all the latest _binary_ packages installed, plus the cygwin1.dll
snapshot from 2003-09-11. setup-2.415.exe used for the most recent updates,
the last one just yesterday or so (I got the new 'prolog' package).
The installation was initially done on Windows 98SE (which resides on C:)
but has since then been "mount'ed" and updated under "Win2K Advanced Server
w SP5" (I think!?) - SP *later* than SP4 for sure.
$ uname -a
CYGWIN_NT-5.0 P450 1.5.4s(0.94/3/2) 20030910 22:57:36 i686 unknown unknown
Cygwin
The "long story" is attached (i.e. cygcheck -svr).

After the previous posting I've been playing with:
$ strace -dno find.strace find /cygdrive/p -type d >find-p.txt
(P: is the CD-ROM drive)
... searching and grep'ing through the result... But as I lack knowledge
about cygwin internals (and windows too for that matter :-7) I'm mostly at a
loss finding anything useful. I suspect knowledge of "find" internals would
help too.
The strace output file is huge... as one can expect (find'ing a CD):
-rw-r--r-- 1 Administ 4768 Sep 11 16:27 find-p.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 Administ 5342699 Sep 11 16:27 find.strace
The interesting "/cygdrive/p/Samples" occurs at just a few places:
$ wc -l find.strace
44812 find.strace
$ grep -ni "/cygdrive/p/Samples" find.strace
44595:92295496 [main] find 2320 normalize_posix_path: /cygdrive/p/Samples =

44597:92296057 [main] find 2320 mount_info::cygdrive_win32_path: src

44599:92296575 [main] find 2320 mount_info::conv_to_win32_path: src_path

Can I see an ls -lan output for this? What I'm looking for is that the
link count for '.' is equal to the number of directories on the cd,
including '.' itself.

The first number on the "." line is "5"... You indicate that this should be
"6" instead... Would this be a more "normal" situation?
In general:
If it "should" be "6"; I wonder whether this should be considered a "copy
preventive measure" (a mild one) or maybe a CD-writer-software "bug"...
Then; should "find" stumble on this; a bug or feature? ;-)

Ok, how about a 'dir p:'? Does it show a "." and a ".." directory?

Yes, sorry, I meant from cmd.
Well, I have a theory on why this is happening and have checked in a change
to deal with it. I'm generating a snapshot now. Please give it a try.

Well, I'm fresh out of ideas, then. I'm back to being unable to fix what
I can't duplicate.
It would be interesting to see a 'ls -al' again, though, using the
snapshot DLL.

To clarify, I have verified that the difference is null - by use of 'diff'
and a slightly modified version of my 'find_test' script.
The script BTW is more general now, reworked even after generating stuff
for this mail; it might become useful for others having the same problem.
Run without args for a short explanation. (attached)

:?7 sorry to hear that...
I did try another thing; copy the contents of the CD to a FAT32(D:) and a
NTFS(F:) partition and then try my script on the result, using the
2003-09-12 snapshot. Dunno if this tells us anything, but I was a bit
curious.
Outcome: FAT32 AND NTFS - find works as it should.
Guess: there is something peculiar with the CDROM fs or contents!

These two instances of ls -lna use SHOULD be with the same snapshot. I can't
say that I'm 100% sure about this though... AND PLEASE NOTE: I'm getting
TIRED (I do mistakes under these circumstances).
Compare the "." -line; should it differ as it does?

That's the problem.
I found a bug in my previous code (strcpy != strcat) which probably accounts
for it. I'll generate another snapshot later tonight.

I'll have a look ASAP :-).
I've been spending time on this but now have to hurry up with other things

How much time does it take to download a snapshot, unpack it, and run
find?
Ok. I guess I don't have any more time to devote to it either. Thanks
for playing.

Disappointing, yes. I was there looking for it this morning at 10 o'klock
or so... saw nothing but the snapshot from yesterday.
Now when I saw the 1.5.4(?) version announced I ran setup; and got 1.3.22
back...
It isn't easy to test something you can't lay hands on. The snapshot still
is "2003-Sep-12" as the latest.
I guess you have NO automatic build for Saturday and Sunday.

Sidenote:
I've got a problem with running setup. Might have been caused by getting
1.3.22 version of cygwin1.dll installed at my update attempt earlier today.
As things went wrong somewhere I tried brute force; Reinstall everything...
setup.exe seems to have some peculiar problem with "Reinstall"-ing
_update-info-dir-00213-1. It ends up with this:
+-------------------------------------------+
[Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library x]
(X) Runtime Error!
Program: ...<blah-blah>\setup-2.415.exe
abnormal program termination
[ OK ]
+--------------------------------------------+
SIGH. Not checked what the problem is, setup-2.340.2.5 seems to have the
same problem (IIRC). Stopped trying to reinstall.
... bash seems to come up as usual, so I'm not that worried. I guess it has
something to do with that particular package.
--
1.5.4 - The same 'find' result as with previous snapshots.
The Samples directory doesn't get traversed.
There seems to be one positive change though... I've tested all three CD's
in the MSDN set once again.
I get "bad" results on *all* of them - i.e. _consistent_, though faulty
behaviour for all of them.
I've also tried a bunch of other _MICROSOFT_ CD's that I have, many of them
show the same faulty result: One directory isn't traversed.
I tried CD's I've burned myself (Digital picture collections); no fault,
I tried other CD's too... not found one which fails. (e.g. Complete set of
Redhat 8.0 CDs)
I wouldn't be surprised if others may _reproduce_ this now... Any takers?
Grab your favorite(!?) Microsoft-package-CD and run the attached script on
it e.g. "mkdir z; cd z; find_check D:"
Another thing; The first line of output here is new:

So start a new thread if you have setup problems.

Problem report
--------------
Late addition:
Just to let the "interested" know... FYI or whatever.
To put it "nicely":
Sorry, to tell about this; but I've had *enough* of problem reporting right
now. i.e. I'm getting rather fed up with it. So: I'll be working on these
problems with "brute force methods" - possibly removing any traces of what
happened.
So, please: don't expect to get more information than there is right here,
in this posting. I might end up posting more on the subject though... We'll
see what happens.
During the process here I've gotten the impression that there is problems
in converting to "FHS" when it comes to Reinstall-ing at least. Don't know
how true this is - but right now I don't care. I just want a FULLY working
cygwin installation back on my desktop.
These problems might have had the main source in setup reinstalling the old
1.3.22 of cygwin. Again; I don't care, as I said above.
-- Here we go --
Prior to these problems I had 1.5.3(?) and "Curr + All @ Install" setup that
was fairly recent. A snapshot cygwin1.dll was present too.
I got cygwin 1.3.22 back, from sunsite.dk, at an setup-run on "All @
Install" yesterday. Changing to the rcn.net mirror gave me 1.5.x back, all
OK as it sems... BUT:

NOTES:
* Disable virus scanner (I have F-secure running)
* Install from local directory
It seems to run for while (10-30 seconds?), no progress bar is shown, and
then...

This seems not be correct:
> > setup-2.340.2.5 seems to have the same problem (IIRC).
But the REINSTALL seems go VERY quick (i.e. not be performed). The setup.exe
window disappears after less than a minute; may I guess that the problem is
there too, but that this version doesn't detect it - in the same manner.
An attempt w setup 2.249.2.5 ... seems to work better. Reinstallation in
progress as I write this.
Ehrm...! It stops on another thing, :-7 - here we go:

Changing mirrors like that may well produce unreliable results. You
should simply select all the mirrors you want to use, and stick with
that selection.

"Snapshot from yesterday"? I said I would generate a snapshot "later
tonight" and that's what I did. "later tonight" in my timezone would
have the same date as any other snapshot previously generated earlier in
that day. The ChangeLog shows that I fixed a problem with something
called "ndisk_links". That should have been a pretty good clue.
>I guess you have NO automatic build for Saturday and Sunday.
The snapshots are not built automatically.

Ok. I lied. This still bugged me and I finally managed to duplicate it
on one of my non-CD directories. The problem only manifests if the first
entry in a directory is a directory. It's an ancient cygwin problem that
should be fixed in "tonight's snapshot".
By "tonight" I am, of course, referring to my own frame of reference
which is EDT (UTC -400).

"I do hereby verify" that the latest snapshot, i.e:
$ cygcheck -svr | grep -i cygwin1
...
948k 2003/09/14 C:\Program\cygwin\bin\cygwin1.dll - os=4.0 img=1.0 sys=4.0
"cygwin1.dll" v0.0 ts=2003/9/14 4:09
indeed makes find behave as it should.
My tests aren't that deep one could expect though; I've run my
'find_check'-script on the three MSDN CD's so far.
I'll probably be using other related scripting henceforth RSN(tm), which
leads to more 'implied testing'.
> By "tonight" I am, of course, referring to my own frame of reference

I assume that should be UTC-4. Then we're '5 hours apart' - 05:00 for you
is 10:00 for me - i.e. I was less than an hour 'quick' checking for the
snapshot, assuming it was published at 5 in the morning.
Being tired and generally impatient is my excuse for this - 'brain
performance' is lowered considerably in the late hours ;-7 .

Ha! ;-)
I am impatient[1] too, so you I believe I have full recognition of the
problem... I was very disappointed (just like a child ;-] - I know) when I
couldn't find the 'famous' snapshot.
[1] I'd day this is a sickness of our time. Waiting for more than a number
of seconds has become something that is hard, for a number of people. Me
included.
;-) I'm afraid of using faster computers than my own, because then I'll
grow impatient on it - as I am currently stuck with it. But then, I have
'practice' of running relatively slow computers; An MC68060 based Amiga, I
still use it, mostly for burning CD's of backups and digital image
collections. (I have digital photo as one of my more time consuming
hobbies.)

You may be on to something here...
I've been watching this thread the last couple of days and refrained
from jumping in since I'm not entirely clear on the specifics of this
issue, but this latest message threw up another red flag that made me
think I might want to chime in.
I've recently been playing with CD images and ISO image programs and
found out that Microsoft often uses an internal app called cdimage.exe
to generate the ISO images they use for CD distributions. This program
has some 'extended features' that are supposedly NOT ISO-9660 compliant.
One in particular allows you to 'compress' the image by scanning for
identical files in the potential image and then only inserting the file
data into the image once, while creating directory pointers to it 'from
multiple locations.' Basically, something that sounds a lot like hard
linking. The documentation I read stated that this DEFINITELY was not
standard ISO-9660. I was a bit surprised at that (not knowing much
about ISO-9660), and I don't know how reliable that doc was, so I'm
taking it with a grain of salt.
If you haven't already Hannu, I would suggest you find a CD (or few)
from another manufacturer or that you know is ISO-9660 compliant and
test against that. You very well may find some different results.
Or perhaps I don't have any clue what I'm talking about with respect to
your actual problem. ;-) Wouldn't be the first time!

This seems just to be a border case to multisessions on CD's for me, I'm
not convinced that it is 'standards-legal' to have it this way. It will most
likeley work in most cases.
Here it seems as find and/or cygwin has problems in some undefined way. I
suspect that Chris probably has a great deal more clues about it ;-)

I already know that the problem is _this particular CD_, as I said before;
it is the first in a set of three, on the other two 'find' does what is
expected.
Come to think of it; might be something to try - if the above is indeed
true.
I also have an idea on how to check for files with same contents (find,
md5sum, uniq - in combination).
> Or perhaps I don't have any clue what I'm talking about with respect to

I have recollections of someone here... ahh... It _might_ be ME ;-)
My opinion and experience is that even the clueless can *at times* come up
with things that brings the discussion forth.
