I've made a new version of the Cygwin DLL and associated utilities
available for download. As usual, a list of what has changed is below.

To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions.

If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin
mailing list at: cygwin@cygwin.com .

Changes since 1.5.11-1:

- Fix problem where stdout was closed when a thread exits. (Christopher Faylor)

- Fix pipe problems with Windows 95. (Bas van Gompel)

- Fix race condition in fork which occasionally caused bash to think a forked
process had died prematurely. (Christopher Faylor)

- Properly deal with CTRL-C while a cygwin process is in startup code.
  (Pierre Humblet)

- Handle RTLD_DEFAULT in dlsym. (Sam Steingold)

- Don't try to use Windows "delete on close" for files on remote shares.
  (Corinna Vinschen)

- Properly handle trailing dots in windows file names. (Pierre Humblet)

- Make the default /cygdrive "binary mode". (Christopher Faylor)

- Add siginterrupt declaration to signal.h. (Christopher Faylor)

- Use proper wait value for tty reads. (Mark Paulus)

- Properly reset SIGCHLD blocking after a spawn when there was no previous
  signal blocking. (Christopher Faylor)

- Work hard to ensure that SYSTEMROOT environment variable is always passed
to new processes even when it has ostensibly been deleted. This should
fix some strange network problems. (Corinna Vinschen)

- Fix network slowdowns experienced by some firewall users.
  (Christopher Faylor)

- Fix return value for unbuffered fread. (Jason Tishler)

- Properly load registry hives and insure access to system mounts.
  (Pierre Humblet)

- Cleanup cygcheck and getfacl output. (Bas van Gompel)

- Add cygcheck warning about multiple cygwin DLLs. (Bas van Gompel)

This load fixed one of those "strange network problems" for me as well.
Name service (gethostbyname) did not work in processes spawned out of CGI
scripts running under apache. I was guessing it was something missing in
the environment, but could not track it down to SYSTEMROOT.

Now it works again. Thanks!

Thanks VERY, VERY MUCH.

I've waited for this fix for 2 years now (see my post "Possible bug
in non blocking read from /dev/tty" from 2002-11-20:
    http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2002-11/msg01106.html ).

Today, after upgrading to cygwin-1.5.12-1 I checked this again and
it WORKED ! Thank you Mark Paulus !

Bellow is a program that use this feature to execute a command every
<N> seconds and exist after ANY keyboard input.

It was meantioned that the update would fix problems that, to my
obviously insufficient knowledge of MS Windows and Cygwin internals,
sounded like it at least could be remotely related to my problem.

I'm sorry if my message offended anyone. That was not the intention.
The intention was merely to report the problem, in case someone with
interest and knowledge would want to pick it up.

I've tried it now. :-) I also stepped through the program with gdb.
In gdb, the first sign (to me) of a problem is that the (first) call
to full_write in the function copy_reg (line 339 of copy.c) returns <
0.

The strace also shows that the first write returns with an error:

  785 383120 [main] cp 289 readv: readv (3, 0x22E6C0, 1) blocking, sigcatchers 0
709 383829 [main] cp 289 readv: no need to call ready_for_read

  764 385711 [main] cp 289 readv: 8 = readv (3, 0x22E6C0, 1), errno 0
  756 386467 [main] cp 289 writev: writev (4, 0x22E690, 1)
  785  387252 [main] cp 289 fhandler_base::write: binary write
  698 387950 [main] cp 289 seterrno_from_win_error: /netrel/src/cygwin-1.5.11-1/winsup/cygwin/fhandler.cc:282 windows error 5

  738  389379 [main] cp 289 geterrno_from_win_error: windows error 5 == errno 13
  747  390126 [main] cp 289 fhandler_base::write: -1 = write (0x22E6E4, 8)
  732 390858 [main] cp 289 writev: -1 = write (4, 0x22E690, 1), errno 13

I attach the complete strace, as well as the cygcheck output:

I don't believe that I claimed that anyone had said it would.

I don't believe that anyone said it would.

I don't know of any cygwin developer who has Netware or is interested
in fixing Netware problems.

AFAIK, none of the core Cygwin developers has any netware access so
you're probably the only right person to debug this problem. Did
you try stracing that situation to see what's going on?

Great!

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to solve the problem reported in

http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2004-08/msg00152.html

i.e., on a NetWare volume:

14 (0) $ echo foodata > foo
15 (0) $ echo bardata > bar
16 (0) $ ls -l foo bar
-rw-r--r-- 1 bhme None 8 Sep 10 12:39 bar
-rw-r--r-- 1 bhme None 8 Sep 10 12:39 foo
17 (0) $ cp foo bar
cp: writing `bar': Permission denied

I'm sorry to report that 1.5.11-1 does not fix this configure script
premature exit:

http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2004-08/threads.html#01025

Is there any other output I can provide to help debug this?

Cheers,
Peter
