When I try to display the man page for /bin/passwd, the man page for
the openssl passwd subcommand is displayed.

It appears that both the package containing /bin/passwd, and the
openssl package place the passwd.1.gz file in the /usr/share/man/man1
directory, so that only the man page from the most recently installed
package is displayed.

When I first observed the problem, I think I saw two man pages listed,
but I could only display the openssl page. In an attempt to clean this
up, I executed "mandb -cq" to rebuild the man page cache. Now, only
the openssl passwd page is available.

Attached is the output from cygcheck -svr.

Thanks,
Doug

But then, how to explain the following?

$ man passwd | head
PASSWD(1) CYGWIN PASSWD(1)

I don't have that, but a package search educated me that a passwd.1
man page is part of the cygwin-doc package.

In the next OpenSSL release I will apply the same patch as the Linux
maintainer, which is, rename the passwd.1 to sslpasswd.1. That
should help.

My apologies if this is a transitional problem related to the recent
changes to the /etc/passwd file, but …

Attached is a short script to demonstrate the problem I described.
cyg-passwd.sh (attached with a .txt exension), will pause 3 times
while you run setup-x86_64.exe to 1) install pending changes and make
sure cygwin-doc and openssl are installed, 2) reinstall cygwin-doc, 3)
reinstall openssl.

Attached is the output from my short script.

Attached is the output from cygcheck -svr.

With 30+ years experience on *nix systems, the man page is my first
stop for usage details on any program.

I believe this problem should be directed to the attention of the
openssl package maintainer.

Thanks for your continued attention.

Actually, I did not. I can see the unread message count, but not the
messages unless I save the reply I am composing as a draft. With all
the RL distractions going on, it took much longer than I expected to
compose my reply - something like 3 hours!

But you got be looking for a way to pop-out a reply, like I can for a
new message. Found it! This should never happen again.

Thanks,
Doug

That's sad. Can we change it?

> The documentation is only in the User's Guide:

While reading the page, I've noticed a discrepancy in options synopsis
and further description of the tool operation.
Namely, options --minage, --maxage parameter spelled as "DAYS", while down the
text they are referred to as MINDAYS and MAXDAYS.
I suggest changing the options description to match the text, as that it'll
make more sense.

Also, the paragraph "All operations affecting the current user" is missing a
"$" sign in reference to environment variable LOGONSERVER.

The phrase "to enter a password which" is probably missing a comma.

Other question is relevance of a requirement "to run cygserver as a service
under the LocalSystem account" for modern times.

Slightly unrelated question. I've noticed, that if a paragraph in source file
have line break after a period, the page is rendered with two spaces between
a period and first letter of next sentence, even though there's only one
character (a linefeed) exists. No stray spaces, no CR's. Is this intended?

The latter issue can be demonstrated with this little sample:

echo -e ".TH test 1\n.SH NAME\nJust\ntwo.\nSpaces.\n" | man -l -

.SH DESCRIPTION
.PP
.B passwd
changes passwords for user accounts. A normal user may only change the password for their own account,
but administrators may change passwords on any account.
.B passwd
also changes account information, such as password expiry dates and intervals.
.PP
If no option is given, change of a
.IR USER 's
password is initiated. If no user name is given, operate on current user.
.PP
System operations must not be mixed with user operations. Don't specify a
.I USER
when triggering a system operation.
.PP
Don't specify a user or any other option together with the
.B \-R
option. Non-Admin users can only store their password if cygserver is running. Note that storing even obfuscated passwords
in the registry is not overly secure. Use this feature only if the machine is adequately locked down. Don't use this feature
if you don't need network access within a remote session. You can delete your stored password by using
.RB \' "passwd \-R" \'
and specifying an empty password.
.SS Changing password
.PP
For password changes, the user is first prompted for their old password, if one is present. This password is then encrypted and
compared against the stored password. The user has only one chance to enter the correct password. The administrators are
permitted to bypass this step so that forgotten passwords may be changed.
.PP
The user is then prompted for a replacement password.
.B passwd
will prompt twice for this replacement and compare the second entry against the first.
Both entries are required to match in order for the password to be changed.
.PP
After the password has been entered, password aging information is checked to see if the user is permitted to change their
password at this time. If not, passwd refuses to change the password and exits.
.SS Other options
.PP
To get current password status information, use the
.B \-S
option. Administrators can use
.B passwd
to perform several account maintenance functions (users may perform some of these functions
on their own accounts). Accounts may be locked with the
.B \-l
flag and unlocked with the
.B \-u
flag. Similarly,
.B \-c
disables a user's ability to change passwords, and
.B \-C
allows a user to change passwords. For password expiry, the
.B \-e
option disables expiration, while the
.B \-E
option causes the password to expire according to the system's normal aging rules. Use
.B \-p
to disable the password requirement for a user, or
.B \-P
to require a password.
.PP
Administrators can also use
.B passwd
to change system-wide password expiry and length requirements with the
.BR \-i ", " \-n ", " \-x ", and " \-L \ options.
The
.B \-i
option is used to disable an account after the password has been expired for a number of days.
After a user account has had an expired password for
.I NUM
days, the user may no longer sign on to the account. The
.B \-n
option is used to set the minimum number of days before a password may be changed.
The user will not be permitted to change the password until
.I MINDAYS
days have elapsed. The
.B \-x
option is used to set the maximum number of days a password remains valid. After
.I MAXDAYS
days, the password is required to be changed. Allowed values for the above options are
.IR 0 " to " 999 \.
.RB "The " \-L
option sets the minimum length of allowed passwords for users who don't belong to the administrators group to
.I LEN
characters. Allowed values for the minimum password length are
.IR 0 " to " 14 \.
In any of the above cases, a value of
.I 0
means 'no restrictions'.
.PP
All operations affecting the current user are by default run against the logon server of the current user (taken from the
environment variable
.IR $LOGONSERVER \.
When password or account information of other users should be changed, the default server is the local system. To change a user
account on a remote machine, use the
.B \-d
option to specify the machine to run the command against. Note that the current user must be a valid member of the
administrators group on the remote machine to perform such actions.

.SS Storing password for network access
.PP
Users can use the
.RB \' "passwd \-R" \'
to enter a password, which then gets stored in a special area of the registry on the local system, which is also used by Windows
to store passwords of accounts running Windows services. When a privileged Cygwin application calls the
.BR set { e } uid ( \fIuser_id )
system call, Cygwin checks if a password for that user has been stored in this registry area. If so, it uses this password to
switch to this user account using that password. This allows you to logon through, for instance, ssh with public key
authentication and get a full qualified user token with all credentials for network access. However,
.IR "the method has some drawbacks security-wise" \.
This is explained in more detail in the section called
.UR https://\:cygwin.com/\:cygwin-ug-net/\:ntsec.html
“Using Windows security in Cygwin”
.UE \.
.PP
Please note that
.I
storing passwords in that registry area is a privileged operation
which only administrative accounts are allowed to do. Administrators can enter the password for other user accounts into the
registry by specifying the username on the commandline. If normal, non-admin users should be allowed to enter their passwords
using
.RB \' "passwd \-R" \',
it's required to run
.B cygserver
as a service under the
.I LocalSystem
account before running
.RB \' "passwd \-R" \'.
This only affects storing passwords. Using passwords in privileged processes does not require cygserver to run.

.SH LIMITATIONS
Users may not be able to change their password on some systems.

Would you like to take over maintainance of the cygwin-doc package?
It's orphaned and in desperate need of an active maintainer.

Good idea, fixed in CVS.

No, that's deliberate at this point.

Hmm, not sure. The English language is pretty lazy in terms of
punctuation characters.

That's ok. The cygserver service typically runs as SYSTEM.

Yes, for the English language. See

That's tempting. I'll think about it. It doesn't involve deep knowledge in
the C language, I assume? (Which I'm lacking.)

If we are to think about it as actual Windows environment variable being
propagated to affect Cygwin processes, it makes sense.
I'll amend the man page in this regard.

Thanks. It was looked deliberate, judging from reproducibility on a number of
available systems, was just unsure, why.

fixed-width terminal, especially if you are using pretty-printing font (with
most of punctuation shifted to the left). Looks almost like there's 3 spaces
between sentences.

Not necessary. It's a documentation package :)
