Ah, I had found a bunch of discussions on sites like Stack Overflow, but
I don't like to assume that problems discussed there are necessarily
known to the relevant Cygwin folk unless I've found them discussed on
the Cygin mailing lists.  In this case, it clearly has been, but I
didn't expect to have to search as far back as 2015 to find those
discussions!
