I seem to have run into the same problem that folks with inetutils pre
1.3.2-11 had with console output from native apps not getting displayed in a
telnet session.
I'm running XP Pro, Cygwin DLL 1.3.22, inetutils 1.3.2-22, and xinetd
2.3.9-1. The rest of the details are attached.
I have xinetd started via init which is the only cygwin-related thing I can
see in the service control manager.
I normally run init with the "Allow service to interact with desktop" box
_un_checked. To see if anything changed, I tried checking the box, and and
empty console window named cygrnusrv.exe appears, but that's all.
My console app doesn't display any output. At least not initially. It's an
interactive program that will finish (i. e. return from main()) when I type
quit\n. After I type quit\n, I see the output I normally see before the
prompt, and the stuff it prints before quitting.
The normal output (in bash) looks like this:
$ ./hello
T: main: running...type quit to end example.
>: quit
T: exiting
$
The output in a telnet session looks like this:
$ ./hello
quit
T: main: running...type quit to end example.
>: T: exiting
$
Has there been a similar patch to xinetd as there was in inetutils 1.3.2-11?
I searched the archives, but came up empty.

I hope this isn't a stupid question. I configure cygwin with a script which
installs all passwd, hosts.equiv, inetd etc..... I have hundreds of
machines configured this way on which all is well. I just installed 2003
server, cygwin, and ran the autoconfig script. I am unable to rsh to this
machine. I get:
dobrin@srdalien2:/home/dobrin> rlogin srdalien2
Switching to user dobrin failed!
rlogin: connection closed.
or
dobrin@srdalien2:/home/dobrin> rlogin srdalien2 -l dobrin
Switching to user dobrin failed!
rlogin: connection closed.

Is there a known 2003 server issue, I searched the mailing lists pretty
carefully, but sisn't turn up anything.

AFAIK, none of the core developers have a copy of Windows 2003 Server to test
this stuff on. So, if you want/need help, you'll have to try and debug this
yourself.
It looks as though Cygwin cannot switch user context to 'dobrin' on your
server, so the first place to start would be checking that the account that's
running the rshd service has the required privileges (see
<http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/ntsec.html#NTSEC-SETUID> for more) to switch

There is evidence that password-less logins (as well as exim) fail
on Windows 2003 because the SYSTEM account is lacking the CreateToken
privilege and can't setuid(). I don't know if/how that privilege can be
added, can you investigate?
A workaround (reported to work) is to create a new privileged account and
to run the daemons under that account (-u switch in cygrunsrv).
The new account (you could call it Root) should
1) be in the Administrators group
2) have the Login As A Service privilege
3) " Create Token "
4) " Assign Token "
5) " Increase Quota " (if it exists on your system. Does it?).
In addition by being Administrators it should also have the Backup and
Restore Files privileges. If not, assign them explicitly.
Rebuild /etc/passwd after creating such an account.

Depending on the state of the machine (domain controller or not) it's
done in the "Domain Controller Security Policy" or in the "Local
Security Policy" MMC snap-in. There's a sub group of settings called
"User Rights Assignment". It lists all privileges and the users
having them. Try adding SYSTEM to the (probably empty) list of users
having the "Create a token object" privilege and reboot the system.
If it still lives, check if the above helps.

I'm having the exact same problem here with several different NS servers,
including NT4 and W2K. To make it more interesting, I have a co-worker
installed it on his W2K workstation and it works fine. We compared all the
settings we can think and couldn't find the difference. I wonder whether

The CYGWIN environment for the sshd service is set when sshd is installed
(via cygrunsrv in ssh-host-config if you used corrina's script )
you can change it by editing the registry
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sshd\Parameters\Enviro
nment) or by removing the service and reinstalling it.

Usually dead silence from a mailing list means I'm doing something dumb.
And so it is this time. I've fixed at least one dumb thing (system PATH set
wrong, so inetd works now), but still can't make my native console app
produce any output through a telnet session.
Messages in the archive make it sound like ssh/sshd solve this problem but
not for me. The CYGWIN environment variable in my ssh session is binmode
ntsec tty. I'd love to know where this is coming from, or if I can change
it. I tried changing it explicitly with
$ export CYGWIN=
but still no console output.
I'll be looking for more info about this, but if anyone can lend this poor
sap a hand, I'd greatly appreciate it.

A bit more info here. I get the same behavior via ssh and sshd. I'm doing
$ ssh localhost
to start the session, as I was doing
$ telnet localhost
and
$ rsh localhost
before.
I tried getting inetd working and turning off xinetd to see if that would
work, but no luck there. I think I followed the instructions in
/usr/doc/Cygwin/inetutils-1.3.2.README correctly, but net start inetd fails.
When I reboot the system, I get two errors in the system event log from the
service control manager. They say that inetd took more than 3 seconds to
start.
Part of the instructions is to set the CYGWIN environment variable to
"binmode tty ntsec" but when I do that, my program stops working even in a
plain old bash with no telnet, no ssh, etc.
Not sure if it's of interest, but my home directory when I start bash is
c:/home/dbyron -- the same as the HOME user environment variable. My home
directory after telnet or ssh is /cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings/dbyron
-- same as if I had opened up a cmd window.
If anyone has pointers to get this working, I'd love to hear about them.
