I think it would be a good idea to add either a mailto link or a simple cgi form/link on the ml message. On the latter suggested addition to the faq I think it should go without saying, I mean everyone has to start somewhere. What may become annoying to some is that the same questions get asked or variations of questions that have the same answer as a lot of the time the answers may be in the mialing list so searching the archives is a good source of knowledge on cygwin and cygwin-apps. When I joined the list I'm sure I may have annoyed a few guru's here by not checking things first ;) Elfyn elfyn@exposure.org.uk Original Message: ----------------- From: Rui Carmo rui.carmo@accao.net Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 02:24:10 +0000 To: cygwin@cygwin.com Subject: Re: A user friendly suggestion Well, I've done it both ways. I've followed the list over the last year=20 via the Web, and only recently I've subscribed in order to keep closer=20 track of the 1.3.16-17 issues. Digests are fine for some people (and slower mailing-lists), but others=20 (like me) hate scrolling up and down inside a message to find similar=20 subjects/threads, and then having to follow parts of the plot in other=20 digests, so on and so forth. It's a royal pain, and does not save any=20 real amount of time or traffic - rather the opposite, at least for me.=20 :) So I re-subscribed to the mailing-list and, after two weeks (and even=20 though it's been easy to tame procmail to do my bidding), I'm already=20 considering unsubscribing due to the sheer volume of mail (and I don't=20 actually store it on my box, but on an IMAP server, so I read it from=20 _five_ different boxes now...). Cygwin + darwinports + chimera + a=20 bundle of networking and security lists equals around 200 messages a=20 day... :/ The web archive is much easier to handle, so any little enhancements=20 (like adding the subject to the mailto: link, which seems a trivial=20 endeavour that no-one will pick up on for sheer lack of time) would be=20 welcome. Since this "why don't you subscribe" thing seems to happen every single=20 time anyone mentions they are not subscribed, I'd like to suggest the=20 following addition to the Cygwin FAQ or netiquette section for the=20 mailing-lists: :) "Please remember that people who read the mailing-list via the Web=20 should not be treated like second-class citizens. Given the Web's form=20 of interaction, they have to make an effort to follow the list=20 actively, not just lurking passively until mail arrives." And now, back to Cygwin. :) Rui Carmo On Saturday, Dec 7, 2002, at 22:07 Europe/Lisbon,=20 elfyn-cygwin@mail.exposure.org.uk wrote: > Hi, > > Im not sure about everyone else, but I subscribe to the list so I get=20 > the > messages in my mailbox.
