I have a Cygwin (setup.exe version 2.194.2.15) full install on my Windows
2000 (SP2)
desktop and on my (W2000) laptop computers. My anti-virus software is
F-Secure Anti-virus 5.22.

On both machines, if I run a "Scan all Hard Disks" I get a blue screen or a
spontaneous reboot while scanning the C:\cygwin directory. Removing that
directory
eliminates the problem.

Is there anything special about the cygwin directory structure that might
cause this problem? Any specific file which might cause this problem?

Thank you for your help.

I find it useful to get reports like this to the mailing list. Now
Cygwin users know to avoid F-Secure. However, the only people who can
help you are F-Secure. Report the problem to them so they can fix
their broken anti-virus software.

<mcnulty> I happen to be shopping around for anti-virus software
myself, which is why I'm grateful for this report. I had always found
my-etrust to be reliable and problem-free, but I'm tired of receiving
HTML-only email from them, something they only started doing a few
months ago. *sigh* </mcnulty>

Cheers,
David

I did report the problem to F-Secure. I wanted to see if this audience had
any cygwin specific knowledge that might be helpful in either solving or
working around this problem.

Probably a bug in F-Secure Anti-virus 5.22, you should report them not
the Cygwin developers.

Symlinks and mounted directories?

If you need to 'remove' the whole Cygwin tree, then use at least
Cygwin tar and bzip2 to archive it.

Try to archive all under Cygwin besides /bin directory.
Then you can untar the package again with Cygwin tar and bunzip2.

Since I really did want to do a full anti-virus scan on my laptop, I used
WinZip to backup
the C:\cygwin directory to a zip file on a networked drive, deleted the
C:\cygwin directory
and ran the full scan successfully.

I then restored the C:\cygwin directory with WinZip and ran the full scan
again with no errors!

So that says to me it wasn't the files in the C:\cygwin directory that
caused the problem, but the structure of the C:\cygwin directory.

What part of the directory structure have I "undone" with a WinZip backup
and restore?

For what I use, Cygwin appears to be working correctly so far. Is there a
better tool to use if I need to do this again in the future?

Regards,

Brad

P.S. The anti-virus program was choosen by the company, I'm just trying to
be a good corporate citizen here. This all started when the laptop (which
didn't have F-Secure installed) was "alive in the wild" while I was in
Japan, I thought a good inspection was in order when I returned.

Brad,

a workaround:
Configure your antivirus program to "exclude" scanning the Cygwin directory.

This is a very common question.. might be in FAQ?, I'm not sure.

Outdated AV software will accuse Cygwin of being a virus... I'm not so sure I would want (or trust) antivirus software that *bluescreens*... especially on a production box if that is the case.

Cheers,
Scott
