There is a very good (and free) network simulator that allows you to
set up dropped packets, delays and much more.
We use it to model crappy coms for some of the stuff we do.
Take a look at: http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/dummynet/

Only just joined the list specifically to reply about this.
On Windows 7 running rsync over ssh to a UNIX server I am repeatedly
getting the "connection reset by peer" error, causing rsync to fail. The
error occurs regularly but at inconsistent intervals. In an attempt to
get around it I wrote a rsync retry script, but even setting the number
of retries the script makes for each of the half-dozen rsync commands to
10 does not guarantee success. I was beginning to look for another Win 7
rsync/ssh solution when I decided to check the mailing list archives.
Has there been progress with this over the last few weeks? Rsycing to
the same UNIX server from my Linux machine is always fine though that
enjoys significantly faster bandwidth than the Win 7 PC (although that
has a decent ADSL connection, note that the Win 7 PC is not using wireless).
Is there anything I can try to resolve this as a working
cygwin/rsync/ssh solution looks like my ideal scenario. Cygwin newbie,
but technically proficient software engineer.
Thanks,
..matthew

Hi listies,
over the weekend I came across a description of a Windows socket problem
which might affect some of us. Fortunately I also came across the
potential solution.
My question is, does anybody have a scenario in which he or she
encounters weird "Connection reset by peer" or "Software caused
connection abort" messages in Cygwin, possibly at the end of a
connection attempt?
If so, I might have a solution for this problem. The code exists, but
personally I don't have any such problem, so I can't test if it helps,
and I'm reluctant to apply this to Cygwin without need.
Therefore I need a guinea pig for this change. Any takers?
Please note that this is *NOT* about the problems related to OpenSSH-5.8p1.
That's an upstream bug which is about ot be fixed soon, AFAICS.
Thanks in advance,
Corinna

I have one situation in which I often get a "Software caused connection
abort" message. I'll be glad to test your change.

I spoke too soon.
Just five minutes ago it turned out that this ostensible solution I
fetched from MSDN does not work for Cygwin, because it breaks typical
server scenarios which involve duplicating sockets via fork with
subsequent closing the socket in the parent process.
Sorry,

Er... btw., is the situation something which is local to your
environment or is it something which can be easily reproduced?

The short answer is that it wouldn't be easy. Here are the details:
I keep a local mirror of the emacs bzr repository. I connect to the
repository via bzr+ssh. Every few days I refresh my mirror with 'bzr
up'. When I do this from work, where I have a fast ethernet connection,
there's no problem. When I do it from home, where I connect to the
internet via a wireless router, it often fails with the "Software caused
connection abort" message. I keep retrying and eventually it works.
Sometimes it takes 10 tries, other times it works on the first try.
I've had similar problems in the past when using rsync to maintain a
local mirror of the texlive repository. In that case I think the error
message was always "Connection reset by peer". Once again, the problem
only occurred when working from home.
I've always assumed that there was some issue with my home network setup
or my ISP, but I had no idea how to track it down. It never occurred to
me that it could be a Cygwin/Windows problem.

The problem is that this is not necessarily a Cygwin/Windows problem.
It's just possible that Windows plays a role here.
As far as this problem goes, it would only occur at the end of a
connection, when close() is called on the socket on the Windows side.
The error message would occur on the peer side, independent of the OS
it's running on. If the connection just breaks at some arbitary point,
it's almost surely not the problem I'm talking about.

In my case the connection does break at some point in the middle, not at
the end, so it sounds like I have a different problem.

Given that this is a bzr+ssh scenario, there's a good chance that your
problem is fixed by the patch cgf applied tonight. Would you mind to
test this with the latest snapshot?

The problem is not fixed, but I think it's happening less often. (I
can't be sure, since the problem is sporadic.) Here's what I did:
1. I installed the snapshot and updated my mirror of the bzr repository.
It failed once but then worked the second time.
2. I tried (once) to create a new mirror from scratch, and it failed.
3. I rebuilt cygwin1.dll with your latest changes (2011-02-21 17:01:06)
and tried again to create a new mirror from scratch. Again it failed
once but worked the second time. This is remarkable, because a huge
amount of data got transferred. So I'm inclined to think there's been
an improvement. But I might have just gotten lucky.

In that case your problem is very likely not related to what the patch
fixes. Otherwise you would have seen either no problem at all, or, in
the worst case, bzr+ssh hanging for a short while before finishing its
job.

I have a problem on one of my machines when I try to do a git
push/pull to an external repo:
> git push
Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
I am not sure if that qualifies as a good test setup for you.
Additional data point is that git push works fine
on another XP machine, with supposedly identical permissions
and network access.
I am attaching output of cygcheck -s.

Sorry, no. If that's git over ssh, it should be covered by a patch in
the last developer snapshots. If it's occuring in the middle of a
connection, rather than at the end, it's something else, not necessarily
related to Cygwin at all. And, last but not least, given that the
potential fix for the potential problem I talked about is definitely not
feasible for Cygwin due to it's unsatisfying behaviour on dup'ed
sockets, my request for a test has been entirely moot anyway.
