It is on your machine under
 Cygnys/cygwin-b20/H-i586-cygwin32/bin

Run the Start-->find-->Find File
would have been a good guess before posting ;-)

Hi, I wonder if there´s any known issue between Cygwin, PostgreSQL 7.23 and Tomcat 4.1.18, I always get the same error from Tomcat (port 8080 has already been taken!!!).
Thanks a lot.

If your using win2k/xp (pro or server) and just want basic packet filtering
have a look at http://www.hsc.fr/ressources/outils/pktfilter/index.html.en
not cygwin but is BSD licenced.

Squid is not a firewall. It's a proxy server (sometimes called a layer 7
firewall).

Squid can add a significant amount of security to a network layout, but
can be bypassed unless it is used in conjunction with a packet filtering
firewall.

Apologies Nicholas I thought I had replied to all.

From my understanding of squid (used it extensively under Linux), it would
be a fairly weak firewall?

Please keep replies on the list.

It is a caching/proxy mechanism. If you read the docs, it will explain
all of its functionality.

You need to have cygipc running before you start PostgreSQL.

The message you are seeing occurred because you asked Insight (the gui for
gdb) to "source" the gdb command file osl_a.c. I don't think that this is
what you really want...

If you are trying to view a source file in your executable, use the
combobox on the source window to find it. Once selected, the source window
will display that file. This assumes, of course, that you've loaded an
executable (built with debug info) into gdb...

Cesar,

The quoting is irrelevant in this case. An ISO 8601 date string (even a
full-precision one including seconds) does not include characters special
to the shell.

I have tried this and it seems to work on my system, with one exception:
Some old directories are included even if they do not lead to a file that
should be included. In fact, the directory hierarchy that was erroneously
included in my test contained no files at all, only an empty sequence of
directories.

I am using an NTFS file system volume. Perhaps there's an issue on FAT
volumes? Which are you using?

Hi everybody, I´ve a question about incremental backups.

If I run that command in linux:

% tar cfv file.tar -N ´2002-01-01´ *
It stores only the files modified after that date.

But in CygWin the same command stores all files without verify the date of
each file.

I try to do it with double and single commas ("", ' ´) but doesn´t verify
the date.

Could you help me with the option I´ve to add around the date??

Thanks a lot

i export xterms from my pc running cygwin to my solaris box (so i only
have to get used to one keyboard), and have run other apps also. once
cygwin (and x) are set up, you export your display just like you would
between two solaris machines.

The credit for the early report properly belongs to Ken, who

Your very welcome. However, in the future please post to the Cygwin or

If you do not already have a .pythonrc.py file, then save the attached
file in your home directory. Otherwise, append it to your .pythonrc.py
file. Then restart Python, readline will now be enabled.

My Cygwin Python distribution does *not* currently support Tkinter.

Try searching the Cygwin mailing list archives:

    http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/

You will find that others have built Cygwin Python that supports Tkinter.

Answer: Yes.

Sidebar: Why is it that people choose to use ambiguous subject lines on
mailing lists? Having a subject line on a software mailing list like
"Question" or like "Cygwin Question" or just plain "Cygwin" usually gets
a [DEL] from me (but right now, I felt like reading it since I only have
8 unreads in this folder).

Hi,

Does anyone know what package the executable 'sh.exe' is
contained in? Is there any way to find out what packages
contain what files?

Any help would be most appreciated.

It's part of the texinfo distribution (which setup will install for
you). /usr/bin/texi2dvi. However, texi2dvi is a shell script which
calls (among other things) tex.exe. THAT program/package is NOT part of
the standard cygwin package and I don't know if anyone has ported it.

Thanks Chuck,

I want to link with dll but couldn't get it to work

I was able to compile and link with the static lib
# compile
gcc -o getdata.o -c getdata.c -DGDBM_STATIC
gcc -o utils.o -c utils.c -DGDBM_STATIC

#link
gcc -static -o /home/jeff/getdata.cgi getdata.o utils.o -lgdbm

but not with this long command
gcc -static -o /home/jeff/getdata.cgi getdata.c -lgdbm utils.c -DGDBM_STATIC

Okay, so it appears that you want to link statically and not use the
dll, right? You can do this because the gdbm package provides *both* a
static lib *AND* a dll+import library.

If you want to link statically, then you need to add "-static" to your
link command. Now, since you are going straight from .c files to an
executable all in one step, your compile command and your link command
are the same. So, do this:

gcc -static -o /home/jeff/getdata.cgi getdata.c -lgdbm utils.c
-DGDBM_STATIC

You could also do this:

# compile
gcc -o getdata.o -c getdata.c -DGDBM_STATIC
gcc -o utils.o -c utils.c -DGDBM_STATIC

#link
gcc -static -o /home/jeff/getdata.cgi getdata.o utils.o -lgdbm

but not with this long command
gcc -static -o /home/jeff/getdata.cgi getdata.c -lgdbm utils.c -DGDBM_STATIC

I compiled it with CFLAGS=-DGDBM_STATIC such as this
gcc -o /home/jeff/getdata.cgi getdata.c -lgdbm utils.c -DGDBM_STATIC

This takes care of the rename problem but am still getting dbm_open,
dbm_fetch etc. as undefined reference

I've even tried to explicitly link it to /usr/lib/libgdbm.a but that didn't
help

Please read /usr/doc/Cygwin/gdbm-1.8.0.README.

Basically, gdbm provides wrapper header files so that you can use gdbm
to provide dbm and ndbm functions -- but you must link to the gdbm
library to do so. -lgdbm.

Also, since by default ld will link using the dll, the header files
reflect this. That's why you get _imp__dbm_open. If you want to link
statically, you have to (a) set CFLAGS=-DGDBM_STATIC when compiling, and
use "-static" when linking. Then, functions don't get renamce (that's
part (a)) and you link to the statlib instead of the dll-importlib
(that's part (b)).

Please search the archives; there have been several links to informative
webpages posted recently concerning dll's and how they work.

I know nothing about gdbm and have not installed it myself. However, its
clear from the first error you got that -lndbm either doesn't exist or is
in the wrong location. Look around for libndbm.a and either move it to a
know spot or add a -L path so the linker can find it. As for the other
error about undefined references, check libgdbm.a to see if the symbols
you're looking for are actually in the library. Assuming the package has
been ported correctly and you're using the header files that go with that
package, you shouldn't need to be concerned about the _imp prefix.

I've downloaded and installed cygwin & gdbm-1.8.0.

When tried to compile programs that uses dbm functions such as:

gcc -o /home/jeff/getzip.cgi getzip.c utils.c -lndbm

I got /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lndbm

gcc -o /home/jeff/getzip.cgi getzip.c utils.c -lgdbm
I got errors on dbm_open, dbm_fetch etc as undefined reference

Please see attached error file.

This is weird. Some dbm calls got renamed to "_imp__dbm_open" during
compile.

Thanks
-Jeff

Looks like libmapi32.a doesn't have this API. Is it supposed to? If so,
you need to create a new import library from the DLL (see the User Guide
for details on how you might do this). If its not supposed to have this
API, you need to find the library that does.

Try nm, just like on UNIX.

Delete what you don't want in the registry editor. Looks to me like the
references you have to B20 are related to some install of the GNUPro stuff.
Only you can determine whether getting rid of that tree is appropriate.

You might try a recent snapshot, with all the normal caveats.

Hello,

I'm using cygwin 1.1.2 to develop Windows programs such
as the port of apcupsd (APC UPS monitor) to Windows, and
first off, I'd like to congratulate you on version 1.1.2.
It is a major improvement since B20, and I thank you for
all your hard work. I especially like the more traditional
directory structure of the new version.

I have several questions:

1. I'm trying to write a small program that will send an
email message (somewhat like /bin/mail). However,
I get the following error message when linking my program:

gcc -g -O2 -mwindows -mno-cygwin -o email email.o -luser32 -lgdi32
-lmapi32
email.o: In function `WinMain':
/home/kern/apcupsd/k/win32/email.c:61: undefined reference to
`MAPISendMail@20'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

The program is rather simple and makes only one call to MAPISendMail.
Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? I've tried compiling/linking with
and
without the -mno-cygwin option and get the same results.

2. Is there a way to know what Win API's (entry points) are resolved by
each
of the libxxx.a files in /usr/lib?

3. When I do a cygcheck -s -v -r, I get a lot of registry entries that
seem
to be related to the earlier versions (B20 and possibly b15?). Is there
any way to clean this up? I attach the output to this email for your
reference.

By the way, there seems to be a memory leak or resource leak somewhere in
the cygwin system because if I do several ./configure commands under bash,
I am forced to reboot my Win98 system because it becomes painfully slow.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Kern Sibbald

Digressing from the answer (not a W9x supported facility):

Dmitry's name is appearing correctly here in Cyrillic characters inside
the Read and Reply boxes in OE, but not in the message list outside
these boxes. This is not affected by switching keyboard. Another
indication that W2K itself has only partially implemented character set
switching.

usage: mkpasswd [options] [domain]

This program prints a /etc/passwd file to stdout

Options are
   -l,--local print local accounts
-d,--domain print domain accounts (from current domain
                           if no domain specified
-g,--local-groups print local group information too
-m,--no-mount don't use mount points for home dir
-s,--no-sids don't print SIDs in GCOS field
                           (this affects ntsec)
   -?,--help displays this message

This program does only work on Windows NT

I use the GNU Toolkit to do my C++ programs. What I need to know is how do I
make that console go away? I tried the -mwindows flag on the command
line...well, i think I did it right. What is the exact command if the file you
want to compile is "File.cpp" and you want it to not be in the console? I've
tried "gcc
File.cpp -mwindows". The Windows.h file is included in "File.cpp". I have
the beta 19.1 release...I can't seem to figure it out. If this is the wrong
address to email sorry but this is the only email address I could find. And I
also need to know a little bit more about bash.exe.

 Thanks,
 Jason

I have download cygnus b19.1 and install it according to its installation command, but when I use set ${variable} to set variable and use echo ${variable} to watch the variable, it display nothing. What's wrong with having the DLL in a directory that is listed in the PATH

definitly, yes.

The cygwin32 UNIX API which operates on top of the standard Win32 API is
linked in the cygwin.dll (since b19 called cygwinb19.dll) dynamic
loadable library.

So the .dll file must we within the PATH environment variable or local
exe file directory. I haven't heard o an option avoiding this, i.e.
compiling the cygwin32 dll to the exe file.

Yep, he has to have this DLL in the same directory the executable is
in. It contains the UNIX/POSIX-Emulation-Layer that's been developed
to make porting of UNIX Applications to NT as easy as possible.

If you don't need that layer and want to compile "real"
Win32-executables you can use Jan-Jaap van der Heijden's gcc 2.8.1 or
Mumit Khan's egcs 1.0.2 for mingw32. They are available from
http://agnes.dida.physik.uni-essen.de/~janjaap/mingw32/ and
http://www.xraylith.wisc.edu/~khan/software/gnu-win32/egcs-mingw32.html
respectively.

Yes - for B18; for B19 it is cygwinb19.dll !
The DLL contains all the necessary functions, which get linked
dynamically to your executable during runtime.

There isn't any way to do the program work without cygwin.dll (it's heavier
than my program!!!)???
And if there isn't in what directory the dll should stay???
There is some way to compile the dll with the program (and then make only
one exe file)???
Tks!

Hello,

I am trying to compile a hello_world with gcc running on my NT box.

I am getting the message that it cannot find stdio.
"fooby.c:1: stdio: No such file or directory"

I have mounted the install directory as /usr and I have seen that this
makes "/usr/lib" make sense, but the "/usr/include" does not exist.
i.e. it is really "/usr/i386-cygwin32/include"

I have mounted root properly, and have set C_INCLUDE_PATH, and whatever
else I could think of.

I also tried using: gcc fooby.c -I/usr/i386-cygwin32/include
and gcc fooby.c -ID:/Where/it/lives/include

While I get the _distinct_ impression that this is a simple question,
I must ask anyway. (I have read the FAQ)

Thanks for the time, and please respond with direct email
(chahn@aonix.com) also,

Christopher

P.S. Using #include "Actual Path to stdio.h" works.

Try ./test.exe or add . to your path :)

Why am I unable to run my programs from the bash window? GCC complies properly and the ls command shows the program, test.exe, to be in the directory. But when I type "test.exe," I get the response "bash.exe: test.exe: command not found."

Obviously you don't have the "." in your PATH variable. The .
represents the current path. If you wish to run this without modifying
the PATH variable you could execute like this:

./test.exe

Two things:

One, I've been pretty quite on here for a while (haven't posted actively
since the whole licensing debate a while back), but I thought I'd actually
ask a simple question:

Has anyone tried getting gnu-win32 to create -or- use COM objects? I'm
actually starting to find some merit in the COM architecture (maybe I've
been using Windows too long...)

And two: Oh, boy. More spam.

Are we supposed to believe that these advertising people were just
randomly surfing the web and decided to check out a set of development
tools? <snort> More like their BOT came across the page and found an
e-mail address on it. Otherwise they'd have mailed info@cygnus.com or
something, not the mailing list address...

Much as I hate to say it, it starts to look like it might be time to block
posting to subscribers only. :/ Or alternatively, add a front-end
mailfilter to catch things that mention key-phrases common in junkmail. ;P
Especially since 'bots to rove the 'net and grab e-mail addresses from the
text of webpages are more and more common.

Howdy,
I've been on this list for a while an have never posted. I've had great
fun learning with gnuwin32 since beta 14. I have wrote a few interesting
programs with them. My question is this.
If a .c file calls for a header of tcp.h or udp.h or the others that are
found on *nix but not in the gnuwin32 distribution how do you work these
files. I mean you can't just take the say linux tcp.h an use it? Sorry
if this is a stupid question but hey I'm no programer or anything just
someone learning. Thanks cygnus its great I've compiled a multitude of
great Unix programs for both my NT an win95 boxes....
