* New setup.exe 2.3 - how to select what to install?

I am not sure how to use new version-selection feature.

I said "install from internet". After I connected to mirror and downloaded
setup.ini I got a screen that looked like:

20000823-1 -> Keep ash
... like this for all other packages)
    @ 20000823-1 ash
... (like this for all packages)

where @ is this character I have to click. Of course, version numbers were
specific for each package. Clicking on @ sign changed version number to
"Skip".

Leaving everything as above, I clicked on "Next". It downloaded two updated
packages (ash and inetutils) and started to install *everything* I had in my
local directory (that is, everything from latest and contrib).

So, the questions are

- can I see, what package version is currently installed? And what version(s)
is(are) currently available on server?

- what does "Keep" mean? With my English I understand it as "keep installed
version".

- why it reinstalled everything? And where do I select which version to
install (assuming, more than one is available)?

-andrej

Have a nice DOS!

The first column is supposed to be the already-installed version. The
middle (second) column is supposed to cycle among the versions that
are available to be installed, or "keep" and later "uninstall".

Yes, that's what it means.

> - why it reinstalled everything?

I don't know. It's not supposed to, unless you deleted
/etc/setup/installed.db or selected a different installation
directory.

> And where do I select which version to install (assuming, more than

If more than one version are available (this has never happened yet)
then the second column would cycle between "keep" and *all* the
available versions.

Hmmm, I feel like a complete dope for asking, but *how* do I select
these items. I've just downloaded setup.exe into d:/tmp (which was
completely empty) and executed it. When it presents the list of
packages clicking on any part of the scrollable list does nothing.
Clicking on the Prev, Curr, Exp buttons does nothing. I can click on
words, arrows, numbers, columns, rows, (with left or right buttons)
and nothing at all happens. When I eventually click "Next ->" it
immediately says "Nothing needed to be installed".

What am I missing?

Thanks for any clues...

None of the packages have more than one version available at the moment,
so you just won't get any fun options.

If you click on the second column (the one with the spinning-arrows
icon) it will cycle between "Keep" or "Skip", and whatever versions
are available. If there's no spinning arrow icon, then there just
isn't anything to select. When we get around to adding an "uninstall"
icon, you'll at least be able to select beween "keep" and "uninstall" ;-)

The prev/next/exp buttons only work when there's more than one version
of a package available.

When you download into the "completely empty" directory, I think. I
know that used to be the rule but not, I guess, any more.

On my machine the setup leaves all those tar.gz files in a tree
beginning where it (setup) resides. I have, e.g.
"E:/Cygwin_install/latest" and "./contrib" branches. Perhaps you've
lost something.

Or, perhaps, I didn't clean up something I should have!

Add me to the list. My /etc/setup/installed.db includes

 ash latest/ash/ash-20000627.tar.gz 34393

But setup "Cygwin Net Setup version 2.4" downloaded today (8/24)
lists
 ash -20000823 keep

Looks as though setup never even looks at the local database.

Nope, it still says that 823 is the current version.

This is no big deal for me. I just like to update periodically. I
can wait until the setup.exe bug is fixed.

It's a bug in setup. Try just "install from internet" and see if it
gets it right.

I just downloaded setup.exe 2.4. Here's what I did:

1. I ran setup.exe and selected "download from internet to current
directory". It downloaded one file, latest/ash/ash-20000823.tar.gz.

2. I ran setup.exe again, to install it, so I selected "install from
current directory". After hitting Next-> twice, it tells me that
the current version of ash is 20000823. In this window,
**nothing** is mouse-able. Some of the items in the `Current'
column have version numbers some don't (the ash does, as above).
The `New' column has `Keep' in every row.

The date on /bin/sh.exe is 6/27 not 8/23.
