Starting with /usr/sbin/apachectl start works (after removing the SYSTEM
written older pid file manually):

[Fri Oct 25 11:24:05 2002] [notice] Apache/1.3.24 (Cygwin) configured -- resuming normal operations
[Fri Oct 25 11:24:05 2002] [notice] Accept mutex: pthread (Default: pthread)

Though Apache is up and running now, the apachectl script doesn't terminate?

Starting as service from Windows Service Manager fails totally for me.

Just to make it clear, there is no way in the world that I am going to
be debugging apache problems.

I know that "I wasn't asking you to do so, cgf" but on the off chance
that someone thought I was scurrying around trying to fix things, I
thought I'd just mention it.

Why does apache tries to load cygxml2-2.dll?

:-)  I don't understand why httpd.exe tries to load cygxml2-2.dll
Very strange.
My problems disappeared:
I recompiled Apache and after switching from one cygwin1.dll to
another and back again and trying the new and the old Apache files
everthing works fine again now. I think my problems were caused by
having two cygwin1.dll's (different versions of course) once again.

But the cygxml2 thingie...?

What happened to protoize & unprotoize ? They used to be in gcc-2.95-3-5,
but they are nowhere to be found in the new gcc/gcc2:

It was there:
http://cygwin.com/cgi-bin2/package-cat.cgi?file=gcc/gcc-2.95.3-5&grep=protoi
ze

But they are neither here
http://cygwin.com/cgi-bin2/package-cat.cgi?file=gcc2/gcc2-2.95.3-10
nor there:
http://cygwin.com/cgi-bin2/package-cat.cgi?file=gcc/gcc-3.2-1

Of course, they are still in the source packages.

Dan

Dunno...

I have apache and mod_php installed, not even mod_auth_ntsec or any of
the other "Official" apache modules on the cygwin distro..

And the question is, even if I risk sounding silly, _how_ and _what
for_? :)

DEVELO~1> /lib/apache/new/rebase.exe --help
usage: rebase -b BaseAddress [-d] -o Offset ImageFileName ...

DEVELO~1> man rebase
No manual entry for rebase

DEVELO~1> apropos rebase

DEVELO~1> whatis rebase
rebase: nothing appropriate

So, I don't like playing with things I don't understand..... at least,
not when they sound "dangerous" ;)

    Thanks a lot

Search in this mailing list for 'rebase'.

BTW: After you have found the related informations, you are welcome to write a
man page.

Some ugly problems with the Cygwin fork() workaround.

Fetch the current version from Jason Tishler's site, see this
message for details:

Well, I'd be more than glad, _if_ I understood the topic ;)

In any case, searching for "rebase" found this post,
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2002-09/msg00826.html
that gave me a hint where to look!

I did a
less /etc/postinstall/apache-php.sh.done

<<
#!/bin/sh
module=php4
module_dll=libphp4.dll
prefix=/usr
confdir=/etc
libdir=${prefix}/lib/apache
rebase_dlls="${libdir}/${module_dll} ${prefix}/bin/cygbz21.0.dll
${prefix}/bin/cygcrypto.dll ${prefix}/bin/cygintl-1.dll
${prefix}/bin/pq.dll ${prefix}/bin/cygxml2-2.dll
${prefix}/bin/cygz.dll"
cd ${libdir}/new
${prefix}/sbin/apxs -i -a -n ${module} ${module_dll}
${libdir}/new/rebase -d -b 0x68000000 -o 0x10000 ${rebase_dlls}
rm -f ${libdir}/new/${module_dll}
>>
I saw that the "trouble" dll was in the "rebase" section, so taking
the plunge, I did:

/etc/postinstall/apache-php.sh.done

And after some output, I did

public_html> /usr/sbin/apachectl start
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd started

So that was it!! :)

Thanks a lot for the pointers and tips; I wouldn't have been able to
solve it

    Javier

there is no need to do that Chris, that's why the port maintainers are
there.

Unfortunatly I'm not reading the list very frequently. So if someone
can drop me a CC when such problems determine, that would be great.

the xml2 dependency is coming from mod_php. PHP is compiled with
libxml2 support. That's why httpd tries to load the DLLs.

No, the problem you described in your previous mail is still
there, apache is running but does not respond/serve anymore.

I'm running 1.3.14 now, I was seeing this also with 1.3.12 all
the time (restarted the server every day at least once).

A first step in this direction is the list option -l which I have added to the
kde-cygwin's rebase, which is a fork of jason's one.

yep, shouldn't we enforce some bash script that can detect such a
"free" base address or modify Jason's rebase.

BTW, can someone of the old guys here arround drop me a line with an

> How do you install it ?
>
1. See /usr/doc/Cygwin/php-4.2.0-1.README after you have installed mod_php4 for
installing.

2. If you encounter rebasing problems, try

	rebase -b 0x50000000 <dll>
	rebase -b 0x51000000 <another dll>
	rebase -b 0x52000000 <another dll>

If this not work, try another base address like

	rebase -b 0x45000000 <dll>
	rebase -b 0x46000000 <another dll>

and so one

The absolute base address isn't the most important thing, the only thing which
is important to find a base address which isn't used by one of the applications
loaded dll's.

Regards
Ralf
