Thanks for the input ;-) As this is a noisy list this is probably left
unsaid, if you really think its worth taking exception I suggest taking it
offlist and/or clipping back the message.

I expect debugging gdb is going to be beyond what most many developers would
attempt, especially if it does not work on their platform.

Any input that will get it running is helpfull.
Specifically does anyone with a 'recent' cygwin have it running on NT4 SP6?

I have only 2 boxes available to test this on at the moment, so I cant tell
myself.

If it did turn out the be NT4 only I personally would just as soon upgrade
to 2000.

Yes. This gdb (v5 20010428-3) hasn't SIGSEGV'd itself yet - previous
versions have, but never consistently (some of the SIGSEGV's have
occured when starting). This gdb hasn't been used much yet.

Cygwin is 1.3.4-4(*1) under NT4 Wks SP6a RC 1.28(*2). There's years
worth of junk on it so the cleanliness issue might be best at the bottom
of your list. Bash profile removes some of the windows environment.
cygwin.bat fires up bash low priority therefore ditto everything else.

Looking at the previous comments above, I'm not sure if this is on or
off-topic? This is my first post to the cygwin list. I don't want to get
off on the wrong foot, hence the short posting.

(*1) 1.3.4-4 built from source but only 2 irrelevent additions -
exposed fnmatch() and added a getline().
(*2)	RC 1.28 kernel to fix non-paged pool exhaustion issue.

You seem to be trying to debug a linux binary on windows.

That won't work. See the first few paragraphs of the cygwin web page for why.

Hello,

I am a cygwin newbie. I am trying to use gdb and I get the following error:

GNU gdb 6.3.50_2004-12-28-cvs (cygwin-special)
Copyright 2004 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
GDB is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License, and you are
welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under certain conditions.
Type "show copying" to see the conditions.
There is absolutely no warranty for GDB. Type "show warranty" for details.
This GDB was configured as "i686-pc-cygwin"...
warning: A handler for the OS ABI "GNU/Linux" is not built into this configuration
of GDB. Attempting to continue with the default i386 settings.

(gdb) run
Starting program: /home/Sumit/code/working/phd/siber/siber-new-network/siber
Error creating process /home/Sumit/code/working/phd/siber/siber-new-network/siber, (error 193)

Could anyone help me to fix this? I have appended below the cygcheck output for my system.

Thanks,
~Sumit.

I searched the archives on Friday for references to the problem I'm having
and found several but didn't see a solution. If anyone can point me in the
right direction I would be grateful.

I have a small c++ program that compiles and runs, under g++, with no
problem. When I try to use GDB I get an error the moment I run the file.

g++ -o linked.exe -g linked.cxx
gdb -se linked.exe

I get a popup window that says:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault

and I cannot go any further. No window ever actually pops up that I can
issue GDB commands in.

The error also occurs when I add the -nw flag to gdb but I get different info:

gnu GDB 5.0 (20010428-3)
....
run
(I get 4 files listed all with the "error reading line numbers" message)
/cygdrive/c/WINNT/System32/KERNEL32.dll
/cygdrive/c/WINNT/System32/advapi32.dll
/cygdrive/c/WINNT/System32/psapi.dll
/cygdrive/c/WINNT/System32/IMAGEHLP.dll

Program received SIGSEGV, segmentation fault
0x77f6ce0c in ?? ()

---

I'm really new to Unix and even newer to CYGWIN so I'm completely lost as
to what to do next. I ran setup on Friday and it updated GCC and CYGWIN, I
ran it again today and it updated CYGWIN again so I'm pretty sure that I'm
current on everything.

My system is a PII running NT 4.0 SP5

Thanks,
Sim Gilbert

This would be one of those "there is something wrong with gdb" errors.

This would also be one of those errors where if I can't duplicate it, I
can't fix it.

Usually, when people have errors with gdb there is a flurry of
discussion where people compare hat sizes, favorite colors, mother's
maiden names, etc. in an enthusiastic attempt to get to the root of the
problem.

What is always lacking, however, is any actual attempt to debug gdb
itself.

What that means is that the problem will go unfixed for the foreseeable
future. Sorry. It isn't good news but it is the most accurate news
there is, currently.

The best help I can offer is...

My (pretty clean) 2000 machine at home gdb works fine. (1.3.3-2 I think)

My NT4SP6 machine at work gets this exact problem.
I did a Cygwin(full) update this morning to 1.3.5-2 and still get it.
gdb version is GNU gdb 5.0 (20010428-3)
This machine has had lots of junk in it including tools like enhydra that
installed cygwin. I suspect it may be some dll hanging around.

I note that it looks like its starting a 'cmd.exe' shell to run it when it
stuffs up, which seems wierd.

Could it be an NT4 issue?

If anyone cares enough to try and resolve it I can get more info at some
stage.
