In the most recent cygwin snapshot (uploading now) I've attempted to
work around the 10ms delay in pipe reads. I've managed this by
resurrecting an idea I had back in 1998, updated for the new millenium.
My idea was shot down by other (then) Cygnus employees but since they
are now gone and I'm in charge of the project it seems like a good idea
to dust it off and try again.
In a nutshell, what cygwin now does is start pipe reads in another
thread. If a signal arrives, the thread (and the read) is terminated.
Depending on how Windows is implemented, it's *possible* that there will
be data loss in this scenario. It would be very very hard to to prove
that is the case, however.
Please check out the latest snapshot and report here if there are
problems. I haven't yet tried this on Windows 9x class systems so it's
entirely possible that there is a problem there.
If this looks good, I will probably release a cygwin 1.3.18 fairly soon.

It seems to work great! I did a few tests and there was no delay anymore
whatsoever. I've just sent the dll to someone to try out on a 9x system.
One thing about the possible data loss: Is that true data loss, like
some bytes won't make it trough the pipe, or will that only result in a
delay because the bytes have to be send again?
I will do some more thourough tests and will report back.
Thanks so far!

I'll test this on 9x myself eventually. With gritted teeth...

It's true data loss but it is very very unlikely that it will ever be hit.
I thought I would get this out there while I ruminated on ways to eliminate
the potential for loss.

Btw, thanks for the feedback. It's an interesting datapoint. It seems
to mean that the context switch implicit in introducing a thread into
the pipe read is substantially less than the 10ms delay we were adding
in the old scheme. This probably makes sense but... this is Windows,
so....

I've used this snapshot for running kde (Kmail, konqueror and other) a while on
windows 2000 and haven't got any unexpected results.

With a Cygwin CVS tree I built this AM < (2) below >
rxvt has problems when configuring a project from a build directory
ie
$TOP_DIR
src
build
cd $TOP_DIR/build
../configure
The problems vary from run to run ranging from 'error parsing uname'
to program hang < recoverable with 'ctrl-C' > making me suspect a
possible data loss
Using the gcc option -pipe seems to allow the configure process
Using the -pipe flag I have not seen the uname error but it does
eventually hang when actually creating the Makefiles
This project uses libtool
With the CVS tree build (1) below I do not experience this
(1) 10-Dec-2002 7:10:38a 6,683,847 cygwin-20021210.tar.gz
(2) 12-Dec-2002 6:09:42a 6,688,318 cygwin-20021212.tar.gz
The times are EST and the tarballs are created by a script that
does a CVS update, make, make tarball which takes ~20 minutes
so the CVS update time should be approximately 20 minutes earlier
Any 'tips' as to how to best debug this appreciated
Norman

I have similar experience. Examining the processes when the ./configure
hangs reveals that hanging leaf seems to be always 'sed', running as a
part of config.status script creating Makefiles etc.
I'm running XPPro, the same results were achieved when running configure
inside xterm or inside FSFemacs (X version).
Attached is cygcheck output, but it was already running *after* I
reverted to 20021209 snapshot. If someone needs cygcheck output with
offending snapshot, pls let me know.
Pavel
P.S.: Sorry for 'me too' type of post, butI think that this can be
important..

- Attach to the hung process with gdb and see where it is hung.
- Provide cygcheck output.
- Run under strace and see if you can infer where hangs or problems
are occurring.

Attached find cygcheck output and the config.status output
upto where 'sed' gets unhappy and enters a repeating loop
This happens when running a bash shell in an rxvt terminal
config.status runs to completion from a bash shell in the Win2k cmd.exe terminal
I have marked where the output differs from the successful run
in make.log
This is repeatable

The hung process (sed) is actually not hung, but connected to stdin
instead of file. The root cause is that when config.status is processed
by bash, then sometimes `` construct forgets all output, causing
different generated file names to be empty, thus connecting sed to stdin
instead of some file. Following command line reproduces the bug for me:
while true; do test "`echo foo`" = "foo" || echo failed; done
When this command is run inside bash, then "failed" lines appear quite
regularly. The bug is reproducible only with /bin/bash, /bin/sh works
reliably.

P.S. I'm leaving today, I won't answer emails till January 6th, sorry..

I meant to test the above before I made some more changes to cygwin
to attempt to avoid data loss but I didn't get around to it.
So, there is a snapshot up there which may or may not solve the problem.
The above command doesn't die for me now, so I guess that's something.
I'll check the prevous snapshot tomorrow to see if it actually fails for
me. I've been a little sick for a couple of weeks now and attempting to
stay with my "work on real job in the day and cygwin at night" scenario
is not working too well.
In the meantime, please try the current snapshot. It is probably
slightly (but possibly unoticeably) slower but it should be very much
less likely to lose data in a pipe.
The latest snapshot also has some new inline assembly functions courtesy
of some cygwin-developers (Gary R. Van Sickle and Thomas Pfaff) which
might cause a little bit of a boost, too.

Nevermind. I just tried the current snapshot on my NT4 machien and it
puked all over the place.
I'll fix it tomorrow. Please avoid this snapshot until then.

This should be fixed now. Please try the latest snapshot.
Corinna also tracked down some thinkos in my handling of text mode
reads which are fixed in this snapshot. Thanks, Corinna.

Since I am testing 021214 snapshot on my WinME installation, I wanted to
report two things:
1. Huge speed improvement here as well! Configure scripts seem to run
several times faster.
2. Configure never complete "finding the maximum length of command-line
arguments" test (found in many configures, e. g. gcc-CVS) which used to be
lengthy but working on 1.3.17.
Thanks!

Works fine here.
Absent any further details, this will be a potential problem in 1.3.18.

If would be more than happy to provide further details, but it seems to be
difficult to go beyond telling "it does not show any error message".
Any ideas how I could help are most welcome.

How about the name of the package which is having problems? How about a
pared down code snippet demonstrating the problem? How about cygcheck
output?

Doing those things would be "difficult."

OH. MY. GOD.
If I understand the problem and solution (which I marginally do), and Win9x vs.
WinNT/XP (which nobody really does), this ***~2.66x*** speedup should be even
greater on NT/XP.
I'm giddy with anticipation over what this might do to configure times etc.
This may be the coolest thing since sliced time.

W98/SE. With the current cygwin1.dll I tried
time cat <hugefile> | nice -0 dd of=/dev/null
time cat <hugefile> | nice --1 dd of=/dev/null
where hugefile ~ 100MB, and got times roughly 1m20s with the 2nd instruction
marginally faster. Then switched to the snapshot cygwin1-20021210.dll and
shaved a minute yes a minute off the times. Then tried creating new files as
in
time cat <hugefile> | nice -0 dd of=hugefile2
time cat <hugefile> | nice --1 dd of=hugefile3
(this took about 30s each) and checked md5sums. Not a byte out of place.
Fergus
P.S. Thanks to thomas for these good diagnostic scripts.
