I think you thought... forget that ;-)
I actually meant to put a smiley on the last post, I was hoping it wouldn't
be taken as objection/criticism. It was just that it put a smile on my face
on a cold tedious day.

A little patience maybe? I tried Cygwin setup about the same time you
reported your original problem. It failed for me as well (in IE mode
as well). The difference between you and me? I waited a day and it
cleared up...the net is a funny beast at times...

I find trying to get around with crutches or with a cane to be extremely
difficult for me. I'm always kicking the cane by mistake and tripping over
it. Crutches get caught under things and they make my arms ache.
Fortunately, my legs work fine for me so I don't need crutches or a cane
to get around. But I don't consider the cane or the crutches broken just
because they don't work for me. And for some people, they are a necessity.
It's the same thing with the different settings in setup. You shouldn't
assume something is broken just because you haven't figured out a way to
make it work for you.

The answer to your question is: "Because it works for me". ;-)
Why complain if you found something that works?

It *does* work. It works for thousands of people.

If it doesn't work for you don't automatically assume that it is broken.

Hi,

Thank you for your help. I found that using the "Use IE5 Settings"
connection mode works. Performing a packet trace shows that this mode
adds a bit more text in the HTTP transactions:

GET /cygwin/mirrors.lst HTTP/1.1\r\n
If-Modified-Since: <deleted>\r\n
If-None-Match: <deleted>\r\n
User-Agent: Cygwin Setup\r\n
Host: sources.redhat.com\r\n
Connection: Keep-Alive\r\n
\r\n

My question would be why offer "Direct Connection" if it is not going to
work?

If I am understanding your misinterpretation correctly you can rest
assured that I try hard to avoid the use of or implication of profanity
in my messages although I'm sure an occasional RT?M has slipped by.

However, that said, for the longest time, I habitually read WFM as
exactly what I think you think it means.

Make sure you didn't install and run any firewall software. Also, try the
"Use IE5 Settings" connection mode in setup.

Hmm. So, your theory is that no one is able to download anything using
setup.exe and that setup.exe needs to be fixed.

I suppose that theory will be corroborated soon as the complaints flood
into this mailing list. Or not.

FWIW, WFM.

Hi,

I seem to be having problem with running setup.exe because it says
"Can't get the list of download sites.". This is what I've found so far:

1. I can use my mozilla browser to access
http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/mirrors.lst

2. Performed a packet trace on setup.exe and found the following HTTP
transaction by setup.exe:

GET /cygwin/mirrors.lst HTTP/1.0\r\n
Host: sources.redhat.com\r\n
\r\n

and remote site reset the TCP link.

3. I ran "telnet sources.redhat.com 80" and executed the above
instructions and it failed as expected

4. I then tried the telnet again with the following instructions:

GET /cygwin/mirrors.lst HTTP/1.0\r\n
Host: sources.redhat.com\r\n
User-Agent: cygwin
\r\n

And it works!

I suggest that the setup.exe program be fixed so that the download can work.
